Martz and Parker net braces as Wilmington coasts to Second Round win

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Austin Martz needed a mere 32 minutes to net two goals as Wilmington Hammerheads FC defeated the NPSL’s Miami Fusion 6-0 in the Second Round of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night.

Justin Moose and Logan Miller added first-half goals as Wilmington built an impressive 4-0 lead heading into halftime. Kyle Parker continued the scoring with a second-half brace as the Hammerheads stormed past a Fusion side that was playing through some injuries during the final 45 minutes.

Wilmington will next face the Miami FC on June 1 in the tournament’s Third Round in Miami.

Richmond Kickers 4, Aromas Café FC 0:
Sunny Jane’s second-minute free kick put host Richmond up early and the Kickers never looked back during their victory against USASA qualifier Aromas Café FC. Hugh Roberts and Anthony Grant each added goals in the 25th and 48th minutes, respectively. Then second-half sub Luiz Fernando capped off the scoring with a goal in the 83rd minute. Richmond goes on the road to face the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on June 1 in the Third Round.

Harrisburg City Islanders 2, West Chester United SC 0: The visiting City Islanders scored a goal on either side of halftime to defeat the USASA qualifier in West Chester, Pa. Harrisburg’s Bobby Warshaw scored in the 13th minute and Matt Bolduc padded the lead in the 49th minute. Harrisburg will now face either Chattanooga FC in the tournament’s Third Round on June 1.

Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC 1, Harpo’s FC 0: The Switchbacks took victory against Harpo’s FC for a second consecutive tournament as Martin Maybin’s goal in the 13th minute held up as a winner for the hosts at Switchbacks Stadium. Colorado Springs will face fellow USL club Arizona United SC in the next round following United's victory over PDL side FC Tucson on Wednesday.

Louisville City FC 1, Detroit City FC 1 (Louisville 3-1 PKs): Ilija Ilic scored an equalizer in the final minute of overtime, and Cameron Lancaster converted the winning penalty in a shootout as Louisville avoided a scare from Detroit City FC on Wednesday night. Louisville looked to be victims of an upset when Sebastian Harris gave Detroit the lead in the 104th minute, and City center back Conor Shanosky was sent off with five minutes to go, but Ilic’s goal in the 120th minute sent the game to a shootout, and Louisville held its nerve after going a goal down after the opening round to close out the win.

OKC Energy FC 0, Mississippi Brilla FC 0 (OKC 10-9 PKs): OKC Energy FC outlasted Mississippi Brilla FC to advance to a contest with Rayo OKC in the Third Round as a scoreless game saw a penalty shootout go 11 rounds before Energy FC claimed victory as Mississippi missed to open the 11th round, and Energy FC goalkeeper CJ Cochan converted to send his side through.

Lansdowne Bhoys FC 2, Pittsburgh Riverhounds 0: Lansdowne continued its run with a road victory at Highmark Stadium on Wednesday. Craig Purcell’s 11th-minute goal served as the winner as Lansdowne advances to face the Rochester Rhinos in the Third Round on June 1.

Saint Louis FC 2, AFC Cleveland 0: Jamiel Hardware’s 22nd-minute goal served as the winner during Saint Louis’ victory against NPSL side AFC Cleveland at World Wide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo. Jordan Roberts added a second-half goal as Saint Louis will now host Minnesota United FC in the Third Round on June 1.

The Villages SC 2, Charleston Battery 2 (Villages 4-2 PKs): Carlos Arujos scored both goals in regulation for The Villages and the PDL club came up big in the shootout to advance to the Third Round. Dante Marini and Chris Tsonis tallied for Charleston, which overcame two deficits to force overtime and get to a shootout. The Villages will next face the Jacksonville Armada FC on June 1.

Des Moines Menace 2, Tulsa Roughnecks FC 0: Second-half goals by Sean Hoek and Elvir Ibisevic led the Menace to victory at Valley Stadium, and onto a matchup with San Antonio FC in the Third Round. The game was scoreless at halftime, but the Roughnecks were reduced to 10 men midway through the second half after Taylor Morgan was sent off. Hoek scored soon after, and Ibisevic added a second with nine minutes to go to seal the win for the PDL side.

Sacramento Republic FC 5, CD Aguiluchos USA 0: Republic FC scored four first-half goals and goalkeeper Evan Newton and the Sacramento defense maintained the clean sheet. Max Alvarez contributed a goal and two assists, while Alfonso Motagalvan, Mackenzie Pridham, Carlos Rodriguez and Tommy Stewart each scored first-half goals. Sacramento will next host the PDL's Kitsap Pumas in the Third Round on June 1.

LA Wolves FC 1, Orange County Blues FC 1, (Wolves 4-2 PKs): The Wolves advanced in a penalty shootout to eliminate the Blues in the second round for a second consecutive season. Miguel Sanchez gave the Wolves the lead with 18 minutes to go in the second half, but the Blues got back on level terms when Grady Howe scored five minutes to send the game to overtime. Neither side was able to settle matters in the additional 30 minutes, and the Wolves moved on after misses by Tyler Feeley and Christian Silva for the Blues allowed Luis Mora to seal victory for the hosts with the opening shot of the fifth round.
