CINCINNATI – Jimmy McLaughlin came off the bench to score the game-winning goal as FC Cincinnati took a 2-1 win against Indy Eleven NPSL in front of 8,668 fans at Nippert Stadium on Wednesday night in the Second Round of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Cincinnati will visit the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the Third Round at Al Lang Stadium on Wednesday, June 1.

Cincinnati had the better of the early chances, as both Omar Mohamed and Luke Spencer had chances inside the opening 20 minutes. Indy also threatened, as Cincinnati goalkeeper Dallas Jaye saved from Thomas Schmitt just past the half-hour mark.

The hosts took the lead in the 36th minute, as Cincinnati was awarded a penalty for a handball in the penalty area that Omar Cummings shot low into the left corner of the net. Indy responded three minutes later, however, as Vincent Mitchell converted a chance made by Cristian Soto.

Cincinnati kept the pressure on Indy’s goal early in the second half, and regained the lead four minutes after McLaughlin was brought on as a substitute for Antoine Hoppenot in the 57th minute. The winger was in the right place to turn home the rebound after Cummings’ header was saved to make it 2-1 just past the hour-mark.

Cincinnati thought it had added to its lead with 13 minutes to go, only for the offside flag to be raised as Cummings found the back of the net. The side saw out the remaining minutes, however, to claim its first Open Cup win in club history.
