SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento Republic FC loanee Tommy Thompson tallied twice to lead his side to a 1-0 victory against Seattle Sounders FC 2 on Saturday in front of a sellout crowd of 11,569 at Bonney Field. Thompson gave Sacramento’s 34th consecutive sellout base plenty to cheer for as he tallied a goal in each half and the defense posted its fifth shutout of the season. Republic FC improved to 4-3-1 (13 points) while Seattle dropped to 1-5-3 (6 points).

Scoring:
32’ – SAC – Tommy Thompson
47’ – SAC – Tommy Thompson

Three Things That Mattered:

  • 1. Tommy Thompson has played a role for Sacramento in each of its three seasons, and Saturday marked his first multi-goal game with Republic FC. He tallied a goal and an assist in 2015 and didn’t factor in the scoring column in six games in 2014.

  • 2. Thompson’s first tally was a rebound off of his own penalty kick as S2 goalkeeper Charlie Lyon dove for the save and Thompson followed with a right-footed shot that clipped the crossbar and crossed the goal line. His second tally was a strong individual effort from midfield, eluding a pair of Seattle defenders and from the top of the box slotting a low shot into the left of the frame for a two-goal lead early in the second half.

  • 3. The spotlight for Sacramento thus far this season has been the defense, and once again Republic FC stifled another opponent. Seattle actually generated a fair amount of shots in the early going, but Sacramento limited the chances on net en route to another clean sheet. It was the fifth clean sheet of the season for Sacramento, which has allowed only three goals in eight matches.
