Rhinos, Battery renew rivalry on ESPN3, San Antonio hosts RGVFC for first time

TAMPA, Fla. – The seventh week of the 2016 USL season kicks off on Friday night with 13 games slated for a weekend that will see the renewal of a handful of rivalries, and the start of two new potential rivalries in in Texas and Missouri.

Every game of the 2016 USL season will be available on the league’s Match Center, with updates from across the league also available via Twitter, Facebook, Vine and Instagram.

GAMES TO WATCH

Friday, May 6
Rochester Rhinos vs. Charleston Battery
7:05 p.m. ET, Rhinos Stadium, ESPN3

The Rhinos and Battery renew their rivalry on Friday night in the USL Game of the Week on ESPN3 with both looking to push up the Eastern Conference standings. The Rhinos are coming off back-to-back victories at Rhinos Stadium to start the season, and now hold a 21-game undefeated streak at home in USL contests that dates back to August of 2014.

The Rhinos (3-1-1, 10 points) took a 2-1 win against the Harrisburg City Islanders in their last outing, as Kenardo Forbes and Ryan James found the back of the net. Rochester has held the upper hand over the past five seasons with a 5-2-4 head-to-head record, but the Battery took a victory in the last playoff meeting between the teams at Rhinos Stadium in 2012.

The Battery (2-1-3, 9 points) are coming off a 1-1 draw with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds last Saturday, and have been led this season by Montreal Impact loanee Romario Williams, who has three goals so far this year. Charleston has yet to win on the road, however, going 0-1-2 so far this season.

Saturday, May 7
San Antonio FC vs. Rio Grande Valley FC
8:30 p.m. ET, Toyota Field

The first meeting between the two expansion sides could kick off an exciting new rivalry in the state of Texas on Saturday night, as San Antonio looks to build momentum after a good win last weekend, and the Toros look to rebound after their first loss in four games.

San Antonio (2-2-2, 8 points) took its first home win in club history last Saturday as second-half goals by Rafael Castillo and Jason Johnson earned a 3-1 win against Tulsa Roughnecks FC in front of 7,837 fans. The win moved SAFC to 1-0-1 at home this season, after playing four of its first five games on the road.

The Toros (2-2-1, 7 points) saw a three-game undefeated run snapped in their home opener last Saturday as the LA Galaxy II took a 2-0 victory in front of a sellout crowd at the UT RGV Soccer Stadium. RGVFC has played some excellent soccer so far this year, however, with Jose Escalante a player to watch as they make the trip north.

Saint Louis FC vs. Swope Park Rangers
8:30 p.m. ET, World Wide Technology Soccer Park

The Swope Park Rangers will make the 250-mile trip to face Saint Louis FC on Saturday for the first contest between the two teams, with the hosts hoping for better weather after last weekend’s thunderstorms saw their game against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 postponed.

Saint Louis (2-2-2, 8 points) is coming off a win on the road against Sacramento Republic FC on April 23, when Mike Ambersley scored his first goal of the season. Saturday’s game will be just their second at home this season, after a 0-0 draw against Tulsa Roughnecks FC on April 16 extended the team’s home undefeated streak to four games dating back to last season.

The Rangers (2-2-1, 7 points) have had more than a week off since their last outing, a 2-1 defeat to Vancouver on April 27 that saw Kris Tyrpak give the side the lead, only for WFC2 to rally back to win. Daniel Salloi assisted on Tyrpak’s goal in that contest, and has two goals and two assists to lead the team on the young season.

MILESTONES

- The LA Galaxy II’s Jack McBean leads the USL with nine goals this season, and became the 24th player to reach the 20-goal plateau in the USL’s history on Wednesday night as his hat trick led the Galaxy II past Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.

- Vancouver’s Kyle Greig scored his 27th regular-season goal in the USL on Wednesday night, which moved him into sole possession of eighth place in the league’s history.

OTHER NEWS AND NOTES

- The Pittsburgh Riverhounds (0-2-3, 3 points) return home to host the New York Red Bulls II (3-1-2, 11 points) on Saturday with Jamaican forward Romeo Parkes on a four-game scoring streak. The Jamaican – who this week was named to his country's 40-man preliminary roster for the Copa America Centenario alongside fellow Riverhound Sergio Campbell – helped Pittsburgh pick up a pair of draws in Louisville and Charleston last week, and now will try to lead the Hounds to their first win of the season at Highmark Stadium (7:30 p.m. ET | Match Center).

- The LA Galaxy II’s Jack McBean has also scored in four consecutive games as the Western Conference leaders host rival Sacramento Republic FC on Saturday night at the StubHub Center Track & Field Stadium (10:30 p.m. ET | Match Center). The Galaxy II (4-0-4, 16 points) and Republic FC (2-3-1, 7 points) will meet for the first time in competitive action since Los Dos’ 1-0 win in the playoffs a season ago, with the hosts looking to maintain their eight-game undefeated streak to start the season.

- The Charlotte Independence (4-2-0, 12 points) are on the first three-game winning streak in the club’s history, and will look to make it four as they host FC Montreal (0-5-0, 0 points) at Ramblewood Stadium on Saturday (7 p.m. ET | Match Center). The Independence have been powered by midfielder Enzo Martinez, who has goals in each of their past three victories.

- Arizona United SC (2-3-1, 7 points) and OKC Energy FC (1-1-2, 5 points) will renew what has become a fierce rivalry over the past two seasons at the Peoria Sports Complex on Saturday night (10:30 p.m. ET | Match Center). Arizona rallied late to earn a 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers 2 a week ago, while Energy FC also scored late on in a 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders FC 2. Energy FC holds a 3-2-1 record in the regular season against Arizona, including winning both games a season ago.

- Orange County Blues FC (3-2-1, 10 points) hosts Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (3-2-0, 9 points) on Sunday evening (7 p.m. ET | Match Center) with the Blues looking to extend a three-game winning streak and the Switchbacks looking to bounce back from a midweek loss to the Galaxy II. Both currently sit in the top four in the West and are hoping to either keep pace, or close the gap, on the Galaxy II at Anteater Stadium.
