New York Red Bulls II standout Derrick Etienne Jr. has been named to Haiti’s 40-player preliminary roster for this summer’s Copa American Centenario, it was announced on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who has featured for the Red Bulls over the past two seasons in the USL, was joined by San Antonio FC’s Sebastien Thuriere in the squad, along with a handful of former USL standouts.

Etienne made 14 appearances for the Red Bulls II as an Academy signing in the club’s inaugural season last year, and recorded three goals and three assists before joining the University of Virginia for his freshman college season last fall.

This offseason, the Red Bulls signed him as an MLS Homegrown Player, and he has played a prominent role in the Red Bulls II’s strong start to their second season. Etienne sits second on the team in minutes played with 523, and has recorded a goal and two assists, while also earning USL Team of the Week selection in Week 3 of the season.

Thuriere has been a fixture in the Haitian National Team program for the past 18 months, and competed for his country at last year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup as Haiti reached the quarterfinals. Thuriere has made three appearances for his new club this season, after being called away on international duty early in the USL season, and previously made 68 appearances in the USL regular-season, most recently playing for the Charleston Battery.

Other former USL standouts named to the side include Mechack Jerome, who earned All-League honors last season for the Charlotte Independence, and Jean Alexandre, who helped Orlando City SC claim the 2013 USL Championship.

Haiti has been drawn with Brazil, Ecuador and Peru for this summer’s tournament, and will open the tournament against Peru on Saturday, June 4 at CenturyLink Field.
