Slow Starts Leave S2’s Hendrickson Disappointed

After losing only three times at Starfire Stadium in 2015, Seattle Sounders FC 2 matched that total on Sunday night as early goals led San Antonio FC to a 3-0 victory.

The lack of fight from his team, which also got off to a slow start in last Wednesday’s loss to Arizona United SC, was perplexing to S2 Coach Ezra Hendrickson, who will be looking for answers in the upcoming week.

“I think there’s a lot of stuff we’ve got to fix,” Hendrickson said. “We’re just getting pushed around – we’re at home and we’re letting guys win 50/50 stuff like that. There’s missed passes, there’s missed opportunities in the box – we can fix that.

“One thing they’re going to have to help us with is mentality, and I’m not seeing that from enough people on the team. And when you don’t have that from four or five guys on the team, it’s really hard to play. It’s hard to defend together.”

After taking victory in the club’s first three games of its inaugural season, S2 now sits bottom of the Western Conference, and is yet to find the back of the net despite what appears to be on paper a solid front line that has included Andy Craven, Darwin Jones and Victor Mansaray.

One bright spot on Sunday night was rookie midfielder Zach Mathers, who twice forced San Antonio goalkeeper Josh Ford into good saves as the side looked to get back into the game in the first half. Mathers seconded Hendrickson post-game, looking for greater energy from the opening whistle from the side.

“I think we have to have more energy as a team,” Mathers said. “We’re letting teams go over us in the first 20, 25 minutes and it’s setting the tone for the rest of the game. We need to work this week on getting our energy levels up for the first 25 minutes of the game.”

With more than a week until S2’s next contest, when Rio Grande Valley FC visits Starfire Stadium on April 12, the upcoming week will give Hendrickson and his team a chance to regroup and find their focus.

After a season where much went right for the club, however, Hendrickson will need his side to dig deep before the hole it digs in the standings gets too much deeper.

“We’re going to have a discussion with them about mentality and the mental aspect because it’s not good enough,” Hendrickson said. “Until we change that, it’s going to be hard to win games. If it’s impossible to win games at home, think of what it will be like away – nobody is going to give you anything there.

“We are at home, on our pitch and we’re getting pushed around. We’re just getting bullied right now. And yes, we have younger guys, it’s a young team, but you still have to man up.”
