Real Salt Lake’s lineup was missing a number of regulars on Saturday night, but the club’s depth came to the fore as former USL standouts Justen Glad and Luke Mulholland came up big in a 2-1 win against Sporting Kansas City at Children’s Mercy Park.

Due to a series of injuries within the squad, two players from Real Monarchs SLC were signed to emergency contracts for the contest, as rookie Andrew Brody and Emilio Orozco were named in the 18 to face a previously perfect SKC side. In all, 10 members of the game-day roster had previously played for the Monarchs

Glad, who scored his first professional goal a season ago for the Monarchs, gave RSL the lead just before the half-hour mark as his header from Joao Plata’s free kick found the back of the net. The goal was Glad’s first in Major League Soccer.

“Obviously Plata played in a great ball,” Glad said. "It was perfectly placed. Aaron [Maund] was right in front of me. If he didn’t have it, I had it. If I didn’t have it, Yura was right behind me and he had it. I think, as a group, we really had the drive and the fight and the commitment to get that and to get the second goal, as well. And I’m really proud of the team.”

Then Mulholland, the 2011 USL Rookie of the Year with Wilmington Hammerheads FC, added a second with a right-footed shot from outside the penalty area that curled into the left corner of the net from 30 yards out.

RSL remains undefeated four games into the MLS season, sitting third in the Western Conference. Given the circumstances of Saturday’s victory, RSL Coach Jeff Cassar was delighted with the way the players who’ve gained from their time with the Monarchs rose to the occasion.

“I'm extremely pleased with the way our team handled themselves out there against a very good team,” Cassar said. “We talked about punishing them on the opportunities that we got. I thought we did that and we still probably could have scored a couple more. But, for this group of guys, I'm really happy.”
