MELBOURNE, Fla. – Wilmington Hammerheads FC’s Logan Miller’s second-half strike from distance was the difference maker as Wilmington held on for a 2-1 victory against expansion Orlando City B on Saturday at the Titan Soccer Complex.

With the scored tied at 1-1, and having had a lead earlier in the match, Wilmington regained that advantage in the 66th minute when Miller had an ambitious attempt from 28 yards. He struck the ball flush, it bounced at the six-yard box and found the back of the net for a 2-1 lead that held the rest of the way.

Ashani Fairclough scored Wilmington’s other goal and Andrew Ribeiro tallied for OCB.

In the 16th minute, the match was delayed because of lightning. Before the weather delay, neither side had really generated any big scoring threats, with the exception of Qudus Lawal’s rush for Wilmington in the 14th minute. His pressure forced OCB’s defense to scramble, but eventually clear Lawal’s two attempts on that sequence.

In the second half, both sides increased their presence in the attack.

After Mael Corboz’s corner kick was partially cleared, Corboz found the ball back on his foot in the 46th minute. He crossed back in and found Fairclough, who headed the ball from the near side and inside the opposite post to give the Hammerheads a 1-0 lead.

In the 56th minute, OCB mustered a sequence of crosses and volleys, and finally from the right side, Ribeiro cleaned up. Ribeiro’s low shot eluded Wilmington goalkeeper John Smits as Orlando tied the score at 1-1.

Miller would follow 10 minutes later with the game-winner to spoil OCB’s home opener.

Wilmington (1-0-0, 3 points) will prepare for its home opener on Friday against the Richmond Kickers at Legion Stadium (7 p.m. ET kickoff). Orlando City B (0-1-0, 0 points) stays at home to face the Charleston Battery on Friday at the Titan Soccer Complex (7:30 p.m. ET).
