Didier Drogba would train with the USL club under the supervision of his physiotherapist

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento Republic FC and the Montreal Impact announced today that Didier Drogba would train with the USL club under the supervision of his physiotherapist as he prepares for the 2016 MLS season.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to host someone with the pedigree of Didier Drogba,” said Republic FC Director of Football Graham Smith. “He is a world class player. For our players to see a master craftsman at close quarters is invaluable. We are pleased to be able to assist a club such as Montreal Impact of MLS and do our best to ensure Drogba is welcomed into the city.  It is one more way for us to showcase Sacramento as a football capitol.”

Due to swelling that occurs in Drogba’s left knee when he trains and plays on an artificial surface, the Impact wanted to decrease any risk of injury for the former Chelsea standout.

Should Drogba’s preparation continue as planned, the Ivory Coast international could be available to play the third game of the Impact’s season, on March 19 in Dallas, then the sixth in Chicago, on April 16, before Montreal’s home opener at Stade Saputo, on April 23.
