SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento Republic FC has announced the signing of local standout Matt LaGrassa for the 2016 USL season. A native of Elk Grove, Calif., LaGrassa was a three-time All-Big West selection for Cal Poly, and also competed for five seasons in the PDL.

“Matt is a young player that we have very high hopes for at the club,” said Republic FC Head Coach and Technical Director Paul Buckle. “I had the opportunity to see him at Cal Poly and he is a midfielder that is always looking to be on the ball. This is something we want, and we feel he will really improve our roster. He is also a local player, which is a big plus for us in our efforts to support the growth of local talent for U.S. Soccer.”

LaGrassa earned Big West All-League First Team selections in both his sophomore and junior seasons for the Mustangs, and was a Second Team selection this past fall after a solid senior season. The 6-foot forward recorded 17 goals in 58 appearances over his final three seasons for Cal Poly.

Additionally, LaGrassa competed for two of the PDL’s top clubs in the Des Moines Menace and Ventura County Fusion. LaGrassa spent two seasons with the Menace and three with the Fusion as he logged 32 appearances in the regular season over his PDL career.

“Being from Sacramento, I am very excited to start my professional career at home,” said LaGrassa. “I think this will be a great opportunity for me as a player in a place where I can make the fans happy, including my family and friends. I believe Sacramento Republic FC is the best USL franchise in the country and the best place for me to continue to grow as a person and a player.”
