LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville City FC announced on Tuesday the signing of midfielder Paolo DelPiccolo for the 2016 USL season.

A former standout for the University of Louisville, DelPiccolo played in the USL over the past two seasons. The 24-year-old made 27 appearances for Arizona United SC in 2014, where he had two goals and three assists, and this past season he made 26 appearances and recorded two assists for the Charlotte Independence.

“It’s just awesome to join Louisville City,” DelPiccolo said. “When I was with Charlotte Independence in 2015, Louisville City was the best team we played and [Coach James O’Connor] is the only coach I wanted to play for this season. It’s a dream come true to come back to Louisville to play soccer again.

“I want bring in a great mentality and to compete, just like everyone else. This team is obviously so special and so strong. Last year, they were Eastern Conference finalists; this year the goal is nothing short of the championship.”

While with the Cardinals, DelPiccolo had a prolific college career as he became the school’s all-time leader in assists with 23 helpers in 87 career contests. In 2013 he signed with German club Eintracht Frankfurt’s U23 side before joining the Montreal Impact, who had selected him in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft.

Louisville Coach James O’Connor said he was excited former member of the U.S. U20 National Team on board.

“Paolo is someone that we have monitored for a long time,” O’Connor said. “We are delighted to bring him home to Louisville. Paolo played an integral role whilst at U of L and he benefitted from the excellent program they have there.”
