Thunder Bay Chill News Release -- www.thunderbaychill.com

Friday, May 24, 2013

THUNDER BAT, Ontario – The Thunder Bay Chill are on the road this weekend to start the 2013 PDL season in Winnipeg to play two games against WSA Winnipeg at the University of Manitoba Soccer Complex. The Chill are looking to start the season with a couple of victories as they venture towards making the post season for the seventh season in a row.

WSA Winnipeg started its season on the road last weekend when the side traveled to Des Moines, Iowa to face the Menace and lost 1-0. The Chill are 7-1 against WSA Winnipeg who is now entering their third year in the PDL.

Not traveling with the team due to injuries are 2012 PDL MVP Sullivan Silva, new comer Zephaniah Thomas and Adam Augruso. The Chill look to take six points this weekend prior to the home opener on June 1, 2013 against the Des Moines Menace. The Chill are looking to newcomer Sunny Omoregie and Gavin Hoy to fill Silva’s shoes and carry the load up front. Omoregie most recent play has been with a first division team in Malta while Gavin Hoy of Thunder Bay plays his collegiate soccer at Oakland University.

The Chill’s back end is again being steadied by veteran goalkeeper Stephan Paterson, who is returning for his 10th year with the club. In addition, three out of four defenders from last year also return to solidify one of the stingiest defenses in the PDL in 2012 who allowed only 10 goals in 16 regular season games.

Coach Tony Colistro is very happy with new players that are being added to the midfield, although he cautioned that the team still needs to come together as they have not played much as a unit. “We have a number of options to work with and can play different formations with the players we have available” he said, “but this weekend will be difficult as we have only been together as a whole team for about a week.”

Game times this weekend are 8:30 pm ET on Saturday and 6 pm ET on Sunday.

The Chill are coming off a great season in 2012 with a 13-2-1 record, losing to eventual Champions Forest City London in the Central Conference semifinal. The goal this year will be to make it back to the Championship Final where the Chill has been twice before. However, it all starts with these two games in Winnipeg this weekend.

Other Notes – The Chill will open at home next week Saturday June 1, 2013 at the newly named tbaytelfield at Chapples Park. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. Few tickets still remain for the league opener against one of the Chill’s biggest rivalry in the Menace. Call the box office at 623-5911 for game day tickets.

Northern Virginia Royals News Release -- www.novafc.org

Friday, May 24, 2013

FAIRFAX, Va. – Following the departure of Richie Burke, the Northern Virginia Royals launched an expedited search to name a replacement head coach for the Premier Development League squad. After examining a large list of qualified applicants, Royals management decided to pursue a selection that was intimately familiar with the 16-year-old franchise.

Northern Virginia named veteran midfielder Grady Renfrow to lead the 2013 team, assuming both player and head coach duties for the season. A member of the Royals organization since 2004, Renfrow takes over as the fifth head coach in Northern Virginia team history.

“It is my goal to have the Royals playing confident and uncompromising soccer and no matter the opposition, we will always find the winning answer,” said Renfrow. “We already have a very good group of players so I can’t wait to prove our worth this season.”

A Washington D.C. native, Renfrow grew up playing soccer with Stoddert Soccer Club before suiting up at Gonzaga College High School. Following his youth career, Renfrow signed with Penn State University.

It was during his Big Ten college stint that Renfrow spent his summers playing in the United Soccer League’s PDL with the local Northern Virginia Royals.

Immediately after graduating, Renfrow spent his rookie professional season in 2008 playing with D.C. United and their reserve team but then soon made the decision to try and play overseas. His soccer quest took him to the Egyptian Premier League where he spent quality time with Zamalek and ENPPI before eventually landing a spot with the second division side El Gouna FC.

Renfrow’s next step found him with FC Leones of the Puerto Rican Soccer League where he and his teammates lifted the trophy as the 2011 PRSL Champions. The well-traveled midfielder eventually made the move from outdoor to professional indoor soccer and spent the 2011-12 Major Indoor Soccer League season with the Rochester Lancers. 2011 also market a career high point when Renfrow was selected to the U.S. Futsal National Team, where he competed in the 2011 Futsal Grand Prix in Manaus, Brazil.

“I have long envisioned myself in this position with the Royals, yet in some respects, I don’t even consider it the head coaching role,” said Renfrow. “To me, it’s more like a leadership position where all I have to do is communicate one goal for the team, and right now, the goal is to be there competing for a PDL championship.

“I feel connected with the team and plan to input my experience when I can, but otherwise I want to help the team realize that they are already capable of winning the league.”

The Royals make the trip south this weekend to face the Virginia Beach Piranhas on Saturday night. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.

A longtime powerhouse in youth soccer, results in the W-League have improved with each year of play for the Rush women.

In 2013, that success is expected to continue, even with the losses of Lindsey Horan (Paris Saint-Germain), and Brittany Bock and Kendall Johnson (Sky Blue FC) to professional teams. The 2013 roster features 11 current youth players including 2012 U17 National team members Gabbi Miranda, Morgan Stanton, and Lizzy Raben.

Madi Hall, Danica Evans, Havana McElvaine and Rebecca Rasmussen, along with 2012 U16 ECNL National Champions Betsy Brandon and Jordan DiBiasi, also have time with various youth national teams. An additional 10 players also spent their youth careers with the Rush and hope to lead the Rush Women to their first conference championship this summer.

“The Rush have always prided themselves on player development. The W-League is just another avenue for our players to play at a high level,” General Manger Dominique Hoecherl said. “The fact we have 16-, 17-, 18-year-old girls stepping in and competing with great success against grown women is fun for coaches, parents, and soccer fans alike to see and is a testament of the work being done by our coaches and players.”

Can the youth overcome some very tough Western Conference opponents in 2013?

The Rush will open the 2013 campaign Saturday when they take on the Colorado Rapids before setting off to the Pacific Northwest for games with Seattle and Bay Area. The 2013 home opener is set for Tuesday, June 11, at 7 p.m. at the North Area Athletic Complex in Arvada.

Pictured above: Back row left to right: Brandon, DiBiasi, McElvaine, Raben, Hall, Miranda.
PDL Feature

Friday, May 24, 2013

Coming off a sophomore year in which he scored four goals and added four assists, Butler’s Zach Steinberger returned to the Michigan Bucks in the PDL this summer aiming to continue to improve his game and build up for a big junior year.

As it turned out, his first game of the season for the Bucks couldn’t have gone any better. Scoring a hat trick, and adding two assists, in Michigan’s 5-0 win against the Chicago Inferno, Steinberger helped the Bucks get off to a flying start in their defense of the PDL regular-season championship, and earned PDL Player of the Week honors.

We got the chance to talk with Steinberger about playing for the Bucks, the U.S. Open Cup and the goals for this PDL season.

*******************************

USL: When you’re going into a game, do you ever envision a game going that well for you personally?

Steinberger: No, I mean for me personally I always try to go out and play my best, do the best for my team, but I never really expected to come out the first game of the season and do that well. I’m just happy that I did, so we can get our team off to a good start.

USL: This is the second season you’ve been with the Bucks. What was it that made you decide to get involved with the club originally?

Steinberger: I know my coach at Butler University, Paul Snape, he played there when he when he was playing in the PDL, so he had the connections and he told me that it was a good franchise and club, so I came up here last summer and fell in love with the organization and the coaches and the players. That’s why I decided to come back this summer.

USL: What is it about the environment there, and the level of coaching and quality of play, that brought you back?

Steinberger: The coaches are probably the best coaches I’ve ever played for. They really understand the game, they understand how to manage their players. The owner, Dan Duggan, he treats his players really well, he does everything he can for us, so that’s what I respect, the organization and the way they handle their players.

USL: You’ve seen some of your teammates from last season, most notably Scott Caldwell, get to move on to MLS. Is that a big selling point for the Bucks, that they have a history of producing players who go onto the professional ranks?

Steinberger: Of course, you look at the history. I don’t think the Bucks have gone one year without producing an MLS prospect and draftee, so I think it’s a huge selling point as a player, coming from an organization that has had such success in producing players that play in MLS.

USL: I don’t know if you were paying attention to the Open Cup [on Tuesday], but one of your Butler teammates, Brandon Fricke, scored the game-winning goal for Des Moines to get them into the third round. Obviously you had a great run last year, getting to the fourth round. What’s that like to experience, and what would you tell Brandon ahead of next week’s game with Sporting Kansas City?

Steinberger: It’s awesome. Butler is like a family, we live together all-year round, we’re a really tight-knit group, so when I heard he had scored the goal for the third round, I was really impressed, I was really happy. I’m going to talk to him in a little bit, and I’m going to tell him to do it for Butler, do it for all the kids who have never been able to play against an MLS team, show them the quality that not only Butler players have but also any player in college has. Any player in college wants to show the quality they have against an MLS team.

USL: The Bucks had a great regular season last year, but you got eliminated by the eventual champion FC London in the PDL Playoffs. Is there a certain amount of thinking where you’re trying to set that straight, as it were, and not only make the playoffs, but make a run to the final four or even the national championship this year?

Steinberger: Last season we had an unbelievable run in the regular season, I think we only lost one game, and that’s something we’d like to replicate because it was such a successful season. But then, you know, we beat FC London twice in the regular season, and then we lost when it mattered, so this year because we got knocked out of the Open Cup early, we really want to set our focus on winning a PDL Championship, and that’s where we have set our goals.

USL: You mentioned earlier that you couldn’t remember the Bucks not having guys getting into MLS, getting drafted. Are you hoping that a couple of years from now that’s going to be you?

Steinberger: Yeah, that’s always been my dream as a kid growing up, going and playing in MLS, maybe getting a chance to play in Europe if I can. That’s the dream, and I would love to capture that dream.

Fredericksburg Impact News Release - fasaimpact.com

Friday, May 17, 2013

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Fredericksburg Impact will complete a three-game road trip to start their W-League season this weekend when they travel to New York to take on the Long Island Rough Riders Saturday and the New York Magic Sunday.

Fredericksburg opened the season last Saturday in Virginia Beach, Va., falling 2-1 to the Piranhas. Kara Blosser got on the end of a corner kick by Kimmy Cummings early in the contest before the hosts rallied for the win. Blosser, a central midfielder, was named to the W-League Team of the Week for her efforts.

The Impact started a young team in the match, with high school junior Halle Parker playing the entire game at sweeper against Virginia Beach’s high-octane offense. Fellow high school teammate Sydney Wallace, a sophomore, also saw action late in the match as Fredericksburg searched for a game-tying score.

Fredericksburg created many chances throughout the game, but were unable to put them away, which is something Coach Rich Stoneman said the team will need to improve on going forward.

“I think our conference in the W-League is probably the hardest, and our girls got a taste what they did, can and will be able to do moving forward,” he said. “I think they are hungry to be able to travel this weekend and put together a full 90 minutes [in both games].”

Saturday’s game will be the season opener for Long Island, which finished the 2012 season with a 9-4-0 record. The Rough Riders reached the Eastern Conference semifinals last year as the Northeast Division champion, but fell 4-0 to the Charlotte Eagles.

Long Island will be led by Grace Hawkins and Sue Weber. Hawkins was named W-League MVP in 2012 and has a knack for finding the goal after leading the league in both points with 38 and goals scored with 17. Weber is a two-time W-League Defender of the Year winner, who returns to the team after taking off the 2012 season for maternity leave.

Coming off a tough 2012 campaign where they finished with a 3-7-2 record, the Magic (1-0-0) opened their season last Saturday with a 2-1 upset victory against the Washington Spirit Reserves at the Maryland SportsPlex.

In the contest, Brittany Pfaff set up Lorena Maggio for the game-tying goal, before scoring the game-winner in the 86th minute as New York tallied twice in the final 15 minutes for the victory. Pfaff was named the W-League Player of the Week for her performance, while teammates Maggio and defender Kelsey Hegg earned Team of the Week honors.

“We expect both teams to be solid,” Stoneman said. “The New York Magic upset the Washington Spirit, which won last year’s Atlantic Division. It’s going to be like a fight in these two matches, and after 90 minutes, we’ll see who’s left standing.”

After the opening loss, and heading into their first home game at Fredericksburg Field House on May 27, Fredericksburg’s players obviously would like to bring home a couple of wins, and hope another week of practice under their belt will be the difference.

“These practices we had this week have set us up going forward,” said midfielder Kimmy Cummings, who returned to the Impact this year after playing with the team in their inaugural season in 2011. “Last weekend we played, we were a little rusty but it wasn’t that bad at all. We’ve got some experience on our team, and we are looking for those girls to step up and make this weekend successful.”

Wednesday, May 15, 2013

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – With a chip over the goalkeeper’s head, Jimmy Tulloch lifted the Des Moines Menace to their first home win in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup since 2006. The Menace got past the Madison 56ers, 1-0, on Wednesday night at Valley Stadium, setting up a second-round matchup at pro side Minnesota United F.C. next Tuesday night.

“It feels great to score for the Menace, especially in this tournament that the club takes so much pride in,” Tulloch said.

The Jamaican forward scored in the 50th minute, following an offensive flurry by the home team. The win snaps a streak of futility in home matches in the national tournament; Des Moines lost Open Cup matches on this field in 2010, 2011 and 2012, by a combined 4-0 margin.

On the attack for most of the night, the Menace controlled and moved the ball with ease throughout the middle third of the pitch. Des Moines was unable to find the back of the net in the first half, despite launching five shots on goal and receiving eight corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.

The home team came out with vengeance after halftime, and it paid off just five minutes into the second stanza.

“I’m happy and relieved,” Mike Jeffries said of his first win as the Menace’s head coach. “Credit to the guys. I thought they did a good job maintaining their composure, pushing in the second half and getting the win.”

The victory improves the Menace’s all-time Open Cup mark to 9-7, and it sets up a rematch with Minnesota, which knocked Des Moines out of last year’s cup, 2-0.

“I think our mentality and concentration will be top notch (at Minnesota),” said Jeffries. “Most of the guys here want to play professionally. This is a big opportunity to show themselves in a big game.”

In the final match of the 2013 Open Cup’s first round – and the only one decided by a 1-0 count – the Menace become the 12th Premier Development League team (out of 16 in the 68-team tournament) to advance to the second round.

With tonight’s dose of confidence, following a season-opening 1-1 draw at Springfield (Mo.) on May 11, the Menace prepares for its PDL home opener this Saturday against WSA Winnipeg.

MAN of the MATCH, presented by Seneca Companies: Jimmy Tulloch, whose goal caught 56ers goalie Ryan Onwukewe out of position. Tulloch is a native of Kingston, Jamaica who prepares for his senior year at Central Florida.

“Fans can expect a lot of goals from our team this year,” Tulloch said. “We’ve got the speed, the skill, the creativity, a lot of talent. Very exciting to watch.”

UP NEXT: The Menace plays its second home match in four days. Saturday’s match is preceded by the Menace women’s team’s home opener, at 4:30 p.m., also against WSA Winnipeg. The first 300 fans will receive magnet schedules. All PDL home matches start at 7:30 p.m.

Richmond Kickers News Release -- www.richmondkickers.com

Thursday, May 16, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Kickers continue their two-month long home stand this Friday night when they host the Los Angeles Blues and Ladies Night at City Stadium. The fun begins when the gates open at 6 p.m. with live music from the Salted Dawg Blues Band, boutique vendors and prizes, with the pro game kicking off at 7 p.m.

“We are looking for an improved performance Friday night,” said Leigh Cowlishaw, Richmond Kickers Director of Soccer. “We lacked intensity and work ethic last time out and that definitely needs to be on display versus LA. Those traits will be needed as we enter an important part of our season. We need to take advantage of our home stand so we can stay at the top of the standings and make sure we bring another MLS team to Richmond in the US Open Cup.”

The Kickers enter Friday’s match following a 4-1 win over Antigua Barracuda FC last week. Midfielder Joseph Ngwenya posted a first-half hat trick and midfielder Nate Robinson contributed three assists before Luke Vercollone rounded out the scoring early in the second half to carry the home side to a 4-0-2 record to start the season.

Meanwhile, the Blues are coming off a 10-day break after a dramatic 4-3 loss to Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy Reserves. Conceding four goals before the hour mark, the Blues rallied after an own goal in their favor with Shay Spitz and Allan Russell cutting the deficit minutes before the fulltime whistle.

This weekend, the Blues travel to Richmond for the first game of the 2013 home and away series, facing the Kickers for the fifth time in history. The two clubs last met on July 3, 2013 when the Kickers narrowly defeated the Blues 1-0 at City Stadium to draw the series record even at 1-1-2. Previously, the Blues edged the Kickers 2-1 in Richmond before the two clubs battled to back-to-back scoreless ties in Los Angeles to conclude the 2011 campaign.

Players to Watch
Kickers: Midfielder Joseph Ngwenya burst onto the scoring scene last weekend, posting a first half hat trick over Antigua, earning USL PRO Player of the Week honors. With 10 points on the season, he now resides in fourth place in the USL PRO standings after making just four appearances.

Discovered at the Kickers combine and signing with the pro team just 24 hours before the season opener, Nate Robinson leads the league with five assists, contributing three against Antigua last week. Following his collegiate career at University of Detroit Mercy, the midfielder spent the 2012 season with the Michigan Bucks of the USL Premier Development League.

Anchoring the Kickers defensive unit to start the season, Conor Shanosky registered his first professional goal with a stoppage-time equalizer in the Kickers thrilling 3-3 tie with Charlotte earlier this month. The 6-foot-4 defender joined the Kickers in April on a season-long loan from D.C. United.

Blues: Forward George Davis continues to impress following a standout rookie campaign with the Dayton Dutch Lions in 2011 and a brief loan stint with Orlando City in 2012. He currently leads the team with three goals, including a lone tally in the Blues’ stunning 1-0 upset over Orlando City in April.

Mexican-American midfielder Rodrigo Lopez signed with Los Angeles following an extensive career with Chivas USA and the Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer. He made eight appearances with Orlando City last season before signing with the Blues, where he has contributed one goal and four assists in his first nine games.

Goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski leads the league with four shutouts in eight appearances to start the 2013 campaign. He spent time with the Chicago Fire and Columbus Crew before signing with Los Angeles in 2012.

Ladies Night
This Friday, admission is $5 off at the gate with the donation of household items, personal items, canned and dry goods and gift cards, benefiting Safe Harbor Women’s Shelter. Founded in 2000 in Henrico County, Safe Harbor offers comprehensive services for survivors of domestic violence, including 24 hour helpline, children/youth services, community education and training, counseling, court advocacy, emergency shelter, and hospital accompaniment.

In addition to a variety of food and beverage options, boutique vendors will be on site, such as Pandora, Deux Amis Med Spa, Mary Kay, Yohman’s Garden, Mac’s Smack, Bath Fitter, BeautiControl, Relay Foods and more, with Bikram Yoga and Vitality Massage providing demonstrations on the main concourse. Included in the more than $500 in raffle prizes are tickets to the Goochland Wine & Heritage Festival and all ladies in attendance will receive a $5 off coupon to the Kickers' retail trailer at City Stadium.

The Loveland Distributing expansive outdoor bar area, located on the south side of the concourse, provides the perfect gathering place with a distinct vantage point of the field for fans before and during the game. Then, meet and mingle with the Richmond Kickers pro players at Gus’ Bar & Grill for the official post-game party. Conveniently located at 2701 W. Broad Street, Gus’ Bar & Grill will offer 10% off for all ladies in attendance after the game on May 17.

Harrisburg Prepared For Orlando

Harrisburg City Islanders News Release -- www.cityislanders.com

Thursday, May 16, 2013

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Harrisburg City Islanders are off to one of their hottest starts in team history (5-1) and are in a tie for second place in the league behind their opponent this Friday night, Orlando City, which arrives at Skyline Sports Complex on a three-game winning streak. Kickoff for Friday night's contest is set for 7 p.m. ET, and can be viewed on USLNation.com.

The Islanders have not only been winning games, they have also been scoring prolifically, averaging just fewer than three goals per game. Not to be out done, Orlando leads the league in goals with 23 in eight games. The Islanders goalie Nick Noble has two straight shutouts, but this will be a huge test for him and the rest of the Isles defense.

The Islanders will try to back up a solid rain delayed 4-0 win against Antigua Barracuda FC last Friday night. Sainey Touray had two goals and an assist in the game and was inches away from getting a hat trick. Noble had six saves on his way to his fifth win of the season. In their first six games, the Islanders have not surrendered more than one goal in a game.

The Islanders have three players in the Top 10 in the league in scoring on the year. Touray leads the pack with 11 points in five games. Lucky Mkosana is tied for sixth in the league with seven points and Cristhian Hernandez is tied for 10th with six points. Touray is also tied for third-most goals in the league with four.

This is the first meeting between the two teams this season, but they are very familiar with one another. The two teams met in the 2011 USL PRO Championship Game, where Orlando outlasted the Islanders in a gritty game that was ultimately settled in penalty kicks.

Even though Orlando is in first place, they have also played two more games than the Isles and a win would move the Islanders within one point of the Lions. The Islanders have never beaten Orlando City with an all-time 0-4-0 record against them.

“Orlando has been the class of the league the past two years, and they are off to a great start again this season," Harrisburg coach Bill Becher said. "We have started extremely well ourselves and look forward to the challenge on Friday night. Both teams are scoring tons of goals and defending well, should be a great game on the island.”

This game marks the second micro-brew night of the season with Traveler Brewing Company coming into Skyline Sports Complex. They will be set up behind the bleachers that are located behind the goal. Gold’s Gym will be on site as well with-shirts, free memberships and Gold’s sling sacks.
Thursday, May 16, 2013

PORTLAND, Ore. – A goal by midfielder Eric Miller and forward Zack Foxhoven in each half helped guide the Portland Timbers U-23s to a 2-0 win against Northwest Division-rival Sounders FC U-23 before 3,681 fans on a Providence Health & Fitness Day on Thursday afternoon at JELD-WEN Field.

After trading a few early chances, the Timbers U-23s opened the scoring on Miller’s goal in the 25th minute. Portland added a second goal 15 minutes into the second half as Foxhoven took advantage of a free ball in the box. Backed by five saves from goalkeeper David Meves, the Timbers U-23s held firm against the Sounders FC U-23 attack to secure the shut-out victory in their 2013 Premier Development League season opener.

Miller and Foxhoven scored their first goals of the season in league play, forward Mark Sherrod and midfielder Gabriel Conelian each registered assists as the Timbers U-23s (1-0-0, 3pts) earned their first win over the Sounders FC U-23 (0-1-0, 0pts).

In the 25th minute, Miller received a pass from Conelian and then worked the ball into open space near the top left corner of the box. Miller drove a shot into the top far corner of the goal for his first tally of the season.

Portland doubled its lead, 2-0, in the 65th minute on a play off a set piece. A free kick into the penalty area was headed on by Sherrod near the right post and the ball deflected down in front of goal. Foxhoven worked into position to knock the ball into the back of an open net as Seattle defenders attempted to track back towards goal.

Meves made three saves in the first half to help keep Sounders FC U-23 at bay, including a diving save in the 28th minute on a shot from distance by forward David Geno, who scored four goals for Sounders FC U-23 in their U.S. Open Cup match on Tuesday. Meves turned in another key save in the 54th minute, pushing high a shot by defender Michael Uyehara from roughly 20 yards out with a diving effort.

Sounders FC U-23 had chances in the second half to cut into the deficit. Midfielder Adbul Aman lifted a shot from inside 10 yards over the crossbar in the 70th minute – one of his team-high three shots. Eight minutes later, midfielder Miles Byass drove a shot from just beyond the top right corner of the penalty area over the mark.

Timbers U-23s defender Bryan Gallego denied a scoring chance for Seattle in the 88th minute, heading a shot by Sounders FC U-23 defender Josh Phillips off the goal line. Gallego also made a timely tackle inside the penalty area in the first half to prevent a quality look for Aman in the 17th minute.

The Timbers U-23s close out their first week of the regular season on Saturday as they visit North Sound SeaWolves FC at Edmonds-Woodway High School at 1 p.m. (Pacific).

Friday, May 17, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Kickers extended their unbeaten streak, battling the Los Angeles Blues to a 1-1 draw on Friday night at City Stadium. In a tale of two halves, the Kickers held a first-half advantage on an early Joseph Ngwenya tally until Blues midfielder Juan Perez buried an 88th-minute equalizer to steal a point for the Blues.

Following several ill-fated attempts on both sides of the field, the Kickers (4-0-3, 15 points) nearly broke through in the 34th minute when midfielder Luke Vercollone stole the ball in the midfield and fed it to Ngwenya. The Zimbabwean international swiftly maneuvered past his mark and played a square ball across the top of the box to an awaiting Michael Seaton. The 17-year old forward’s low shot was blocked by a staunch Blues defense but Nate Robinson attempted to scoop up the rebound near the endline, only to see his shot from a difficult angle cleared off the line.

The Kickers’ attack would not be stifled three minutes later when Robinson struck a low, driven ball through traffic from the top of the penalty area. The Blues defense once again redirected the ball from harm’s way, but this time the ricochet found a well-positioned Ngwenya. Taking two steps around his defender, he lofted the ball over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Steve Gonzalez and into the back of the net.

The Blues (4-4-2, 14 points) saw their best chance of the half thwarted a minute later when midfielder Rodrigo Lopez received the ball on at the left post but Kickers goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra threw his body in the line of fire to make the save.

After the restart, the Kickers saw their hopes of doubling the score denied in the 68th minute. Robinson’s well-timed cross drifted over the commotion in the box, finding second half substitute Joseph Haboush six yards out but the former VCU midfielder’s volley from point-blank range clipped just over the crossbar.

With less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the Blues pressed forward and nearly capitalized on several chances in rapid fire succession. First, in the 81st minute, a dangerous corner kick was played into the box, forcing Dykstra to punch it through the swarming box. Shay Spitz kept the ball in play, connecting with Duach Jock at the left edge of the six-yard box, but the Kickers goalkeeper leapt to his feet to grab his diving header as it was headed towards goal.

Dykstra’s acrobatics were tested again three minutes later when a streaking Perez carried the ball down the left flank and slotted it on target, but Dykstra dove to his right to wrap it around the post.

The Blues offensive efforts paid off in the 88th minute after a threatening ball pinged around the box before Chris Cortez sprung Perez free at the left post, who fired a rocket into the far right corner to level the score with minutes to spare, earning the Blues a valuable road point.

The Richmond Kickers will enter the 100th edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in the Second Round on Tuesday night when they host Icon FC of the U.S. Adult Soccer Association (USASA) at City Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and tickets are on sale now at RichmondKickers.com. Should the Kickers advance past Icon, they will host their official Major League Soccer affiliate, D.C. United, on Tuesday, May 28 at 7 p.m.

David Durant scored in the 69th minute for the SeaWolves.

“It’s a good starting point for us,” said SeaWolves coach Ed Moore, who was leading the club for the first time. “I thought both of their goals came from bad turnovers but those are things we can fix.”

Phillips got the Timbers on the board early, firing a header off a cross from Jaime Velasco into the net for a 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, SeaWolves defender Nick Hamer fell down handling the ball and Phillips – Hamer’s teammate at Gonzaga – took control and easily beat North Sound keeper Ryan Herman 1-on-1 for a 2-0 Portland lead.

“You could tell in the first 20 minutes our guys were nervous,” Moore said. “But we regrouped and came together and it was nice to see us respond well to getting down early.”

The SeaWolves had a couple chances to get on the scoreboard in the first half. In the 19th minute Victor Vasquez collected a loose ball in front of the Portland goal but Vasquez’s shot was just knocked away by Portland keeper David Meves. Meves also made a diving save on a low shot by Brad Jacobson.

Durant, a native of Nottingham, England, came on in the 63rd minute and six minutes later he found the back of the net, firing a long shot past Meves for North Sound’s first goal of the season.

“It was a good, spirited effort,” Durant said. “We were unlucky to not get a point but we just have to cut out some mistakes.”

The SeaWolves continued to push forward. Zach Hamer missed high off a volley three minutes after Durant’s goal. In stoppage time, Josh Heard crossed a ball into the goal box to Durant but his shot was knocked away. Durant returned the favor, crossing to a charging Heard but Meves made a save.

The SeaWolves next play on Saturday, May 25 against the Victoria Highlanders at Royal Athletic Park. The next home match is June 7 against the Vancouver Whitecaps U-23 team.

Saturday, May 18, 2013

TUCSON, Ariz. — It took FC Tucson six PDL matches to score more than one goal in 2012. The club did that in just its second match in 2013. FC Tucson downed Southern California 3-1 on Saturday in front of a crowd of 747 at the Kino Sports Complex. The win gives FC Tucson (1-0-1) four points out of a possible six to begin the season.

“It was unbelievable,” said FC Tucson forward David Clemens “I’m grateful I got the chance to be in the lineup and the fans were unbelievable. It’s an awesome experience to be in front of all the fans. I mean the atmosphere is unbelievable there’s nothing else I could ask for.”

FC Tucson pressed the Seahorses (0-2-0) defense early and often, testing goalkeeper Cody Suppe for the first 20 minutes of the match. The club finally broke through following a penalty called in the box after Eli Galbraith-Knapp drew a foul. Ricardo Velazco calmly stepped up to the spot of the ball and hit the back of the net with his penalty kick to give Tucson a 1-0 lead at the 21st minute.

Twenty minutes later, Clemens had arguably the highlight of the night despite not even scoring a goal. Clemens picked up the ball in the attacking right corner of the field. With two defenders between him and the 18-yard box, Clemens darted past the first defender’s left side with a sliver of space left between him and the endline. Then he rushed past the second defender’s right side on his way into the 18-yard box. And finally he took a quick shot that passed the goalkeeper, only to slam against the crossbar.

Clemens had another chance moments later when Connor Brandt toe poked a slow-rolling pass to him into the box. The Virginia Tech product had to wait a little bit for the ball to reach him but he calmly shot the ball into the back of the net to give Tucson a 2-0 lead at the 44th minute.

“I felt that I could get another one,” Clemens said. “I kept plugging it in, and Connor played a great ball in and I just slipped it past the goalie.”

Southern California opened the second half on the attack, notching a shot on goal less than five minutes into the second frame. Then in the 49th minute, the Seahorses’ Zach Bautista cut the lead to one.

The game slowed down a bit after the goal and neither team could create any dangerous chances. Then Southern California’s Geoff Bowman earned a red card in the 83rd minute, which all but killed any chance for the Seahorses to tie the match. Velazco iced the match with his 86th-minute goal, his second of the match.

“It feels fantastic to finally score,” Velazco said. “It’s my first goal and I made one the second half (and) it feels great. The fans are great, I love them, everyone here is fantastic. I love everybody. I couldn’t be more happy.”

FC Tucson’s next match will be on Tuesday night in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup against the San Antonio Scorpions.

Sunday, May 19, 2013

READING, Pa. – It’s difficult to start a season any better than Reading United A.C. have in 2013. Reading have started the season by scoring thirteen goals and have gone 270 minutes without conceding a goal on the way to earning three wins in all competitions. On Sunday, Reading posted a solid 3-0 victory over the visiting New Jersey LUSO Rangers in Premier Development League action. Goals from captain Steve Neumann, Stephen Baker and Jason Plumhoff and a strong showing from the Reading defensive unit helped to keep United perfect.

The match against the Rangers was Reading’s third in eight days. Head Coach Brendan Burke used the match to rest some key members of the squad ahead of Tuesday’s second round U.S. Open Cup match against the Harrisburg City Islanders. Burke made seven changes to United’s starting line-up that played against FC Lehigh Valley United Sonic, including handing goalkeeper Alex Bono his first start of the season.

Reading again started fast, pressing the Rangers’ defense in early minutes of the match. PDL Player of the Week Mario Pinto created United’s first opportunity, racing into the New Jersey penalty area before crossing to a streaking Shane Campbell. The Rangers scrambled to clear the early threat, but they continued to struggle with Reading’s high tempo passing game.

A Rangers’ error allowed United to get on the scoreboard in the 15th minute. While attempting to close down Reading midfielder Dante Marini, one of the New Jersey defenders handled the ball in the area. Referee Ian Bongaardt pointed to the spot and Neumann fired his effort into the upper-left corner of the goal to stake Reading to a 1-0 lead.

The Rangers did little to threaten United’s back four and failed to record a shot in the first half. They did manage to hold firm defensively over the final 30 minutes of the half to keep the score at 1-0.

With an eye towards Tuesday’s Open Cup match, Burke made four substitutions at the half. Neumann made way for his Georgetown teammate Melvin Snoh. Jonny Dolezal replaced Damion Lowe in central defense while Fatai Alashe made his Reading debut when he came on for Keegan Rosenberry. Pinto would also come off in favor of Penn product Stephen Baker.

New Jersey upped its game in the second half, frequently testing the Reading back four. Following a Plumhoff free kick that forced Rangers’ keeper Rafeal Krauze into a spectacular diving save, New Jersey countered and a low drive to the far post sent Bono diving to his right to tip the ball around the post for a Rangers’ corner in the 56th minute. The big Syracuse keeper came off his line strongly to claim the corner and end the threat.

United would double their lead in the 73rd minute. Attacking down the right flank, Darius Madison worked his way into the box and picked out Plumhoff near the penalty spot. The midfielder took a shot, but it was blocked and rebounded back to his feet. Plumhoff spotted Baker on the left side of the penalty area and the Penn forward buried his opportunity to make it 2-0.

Any chance of a Rangers comeback ended in the 80th minute when Phillip Cunha picked up his second yellow card of the evening and was ejected for a hard challenge on Bill McConnell.

Reading sealed the win in second half stoppage time when Marini worked his way down the left flank before sending an inch perfect cross to an unmarked Plumhoff, who headed the ball home to make it 3-0 to Reading. “I saw Dante winding up and just got myself to the back post. The cross was amazing, I just headed it home,” said Plumhoff.

With the win, Reading sit atop the PDL’s Mid Atlantic Division with six points and an eye-popping plus-11 goal differential. “The six points are huge,” said Burke. “Early season is when we’ve tripped up in the past. Now, we’ve stepped up and taken care of business and done it in style.”

United will look to continue their winning ways when they play fellow Philadelphia Union affiliate, the Harrisburg City Islanders, in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night. Reading will look to avenge a close 2-1 loss to Harrisburg in the 2011 U.S. Open Cup. The match will be played on Reading’s home field, Exeter’s Don Thomas Stadium with kick off scheduled for 7 p.m.

Austin Aztex Feature -- www.austinaztex.com

Monday, May 20, 2013

AUSTIN, Texas -- Andres Cuero is standing in front of a green screen at a local television studio filming promotions for an upcoming youth soccer tournament. The Aztex forward is asked to add more energy to each take, the television producer asking for that “gusto” for the promo.

Cuero is finding the energy for the shot, but a few minutes into filming, Cuero receives news: The Austin Aztex would host his former team, the Wilmington Hammerheads, if they advance to the Second Round of the U.S. Open Cup.

Immediately, Cuero is jubilant at the news and on his next take he attacks the promotion with a buzzing energy filled with a renewed sense of vigor.

He found his “gusto”.

Few people are being filmed when they receive news of a dream matchup. For Cuero, the Hammerheads announcement brought electricity into the room.

“When I found out about the possible match up against the Hammerheads I got really excited,” Cuero said. “I think whenever anyone plays against a former team, and still having friends on it, the game becomes a little more meaningful.”

Cuero joined the Aztex after spending the previous two years with the USL PRO squad. Cuero had to work his way on to the team, and he was able to do so after a strong showing during open tryouts in March 2011.

The forward scored four goals and added an assist in 1,441 minutes played over his two seasons. However, the bulk of his work came in the 2011 season, where Cuero scored three goals and the assist after logging 1,117 minutes. In 2012, Cuero was a key role player in limited minutes for the Hammerheads, who lost to the Charleston Battery in the USL PRO championship game.

“I enjoyed my time in Wilmington,” Cuero said. “They have a strong backing from the community and their fan base is one of the best in the USL PRO and that was awesome to experience.”

Now Cuero has returned to Austin, where he was a graduate from Westlake High School. Cuero’s transition to the Aztex has also gone smoothly.

“Paul (Dalglish) has done a good job in bringing in not only quality players but also stand-up guys as well,” Cuero said. “So right off the bat we have all gotten along well.

“Representing Austin in the U.S. Open Cup means a lot to me,” he added. “I am from Austin so having the opportunity to represent it on a grand scale is an honor. It also means a lot to represent the hard work that the owners, staff, and coaches have put into this great club. I think being able to positively recognize the Aztex is a tribute to those who work hard behind the scenes and the U.S. Open Cup is a good means to do so.”

Cuero did not disappoint during the 3-0 first-round victory against the NTX Rayados. The forward scored the opening goal in the 14th minute when he collected a rebound from Sito Seoane’s shot on goal. Cuero was able to tap the ball in just far enough for the ball to cross the line. The win secured the matchup versus the Hammerheads, a dream matchup for Cuero.

Aztex Head Coach Paul Dalglish says regardless if it were cup game or not, there is an extra motivation to perform well any time a player faces off against a former team.

“I am sure Andres will be motivated to prove himself against his former teammates,” Dalglish said.

With Tuesday’s match on the horizon, the Aztex are focused on the Hammerheads. After all, the Hammerheads are the first pro team to visit Austin since 2010.

Cuero in particular is ready for the reunion on the field with his former team. After training wrapped up Monday morning, Cuero stood on the field and took extra shots on goal, envisioning the game tomorrow.

“I feel very good about the matchup,” Cuero said. “I think with the squad that Paul has assembled, with all the talent and blue collar work ethic, we can match up against anyone. What I would love most is to win. I don’t care how we do it or who scores as long as we get the win.”

Graduates from the Fury Youth Academy Emma Donnelly and Kayla Adamek will begin their first W-League season, as will Carleton University players Briana DeSouza and Veronica Mazzella.

Two new faces that boast plenty of W-League experience are Alysha Mottershead and Kinley McNicoll, who join the Fury from the Toronto Lady Lynx, along with Canadian U20 National team player Shelina Zadorsky.

The final new look for the Fury this season will be their logo, which will feature a star set above the crest to signify their W-League Championship - a reminder of more than a decade of hard work and commitment to success and development.

NYCFC becomes the first MLS club whose home will be located within the five boroughs, joining the Red Bulls as the second MLS club in the metropolitan area.

“Soccer is one of the world’s most exciting and popular sports, and it should be played on the world’s biggest stage -- in New York City,” said Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. “New Yorkers are the greatest sports fans in the world, and they will welcome a Major League Soccer franchise with the full-throated and loyal support they are famous for. Manchester City has a great reputation for both winning teams and serious community investment, and that will help them fit in well with the excellent leadership of New York City’s other professional sports teams. Increasingly, sports events and activities -- from the NHL playoffs to the MLB All-Star game to the SuperBowl -- are spurring economic growth, as our investments in new arenas and infrastructure are paying off.”

MLS was advised by Joe Ravitch and The Raine Group in connection with this transaction.

Future: A Home Field for NYC’s Newest Team

New York City FC is committed to seeking a new permanent stadium in New York. Until that time, the new team is arranging to play in an interim home beginning in its inaugural MLS season in 2015. Over the past year, MLS began discussions with the City of New York and other stakeholders about the possibility of constructing a new stadium in Flushing Meadows Corona Park (FMCP) in Queens. The Club’s new management will continue these discussions with local government officials, community residents and businesses, soccer leagues, and MLS. The Club will continue to review other potential sites as well.

“New York City FC will have a permanent home in the City in the great traditions of New York sports and world soccer -- a home that must be a sports, commercial and civic success,” Soriano said. “But in considering any stadium site, we will listen first. This is what we have always done in Manchester and what we will do in New York. Only in this way, can the Club truly represent the City whose name it will carry.”

“City Soccer in the Community”: NYC FC’s Commitment to Youth Soccer in NYC

Manchester City is a leader among sports organizations in its charitable efforts, with one-sixth of its staff fully dedicated full-time to community outreach. Building on this tradition of community outreach, New York City FC will expand and enhance the grassroots youth soccer program “City Soccer in the Community,” which it has been running in New York since 2010. The program, now headquartered at PS 72 (Lexington Academy) in East Harlem, which boasts New York City’s only rooftop soccer field, provides quality soccer instruction and programming to thousands of children in 20 NYC public schools each year. New York City FC looks forward to expanding its community outreach to bring soccer to thousands of more kids throughout the five boroughs.

Manchester City has funded the construction of soccer facilities for youth in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and Washington D.C. In addition, the “City in the Community,” foundation focuses on similar initiatives worldwide.

USL PRO News Release

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

TAMPA, Fla. – USL PRO named its Team of the Week for Week Nine of the season on Tuesday, with the Charleston Battery’s Dane Kelly earning Player of the Week honors after scoring the game-winning goal in the Battery’s 1-0 win against the Houston Dynamo Reserves on Sunday morning. The win moved the Battery into second place in the USL PRO standings, and handed Houston its first reserve defeat this season.

Kelly proved a threat from the off against the Dynamo Reserves, making good runs in behind the defense and helping create attacking opportunities throughout. Kelly was rewarded in the 35th minute as the Battery took a quick free kick that released Emmanuel Adjetay down the left, and his cross to the far post was volleyed home by Kelly for his second goal of the season.

Joining Kelly on the Team of the Week was his Battery teammate Colin Falvey, who put in a strong performance defensively as the Battery withstood late Houston pressure to claim victory. Falvey made a key block of a shot by Brian Ownby, sending the ball out for a corner, and kept his back line organized throughout the contest.

Falvey was joined in the Team of the Week defense by the Charlotte Eagles’ Shaun Francis, who scored a spectacular goal to give his side a 1-0 win against Charleston last Tuesday night. Wilmington’s Jamel Wallace was also selected after scoring in the Hammerheads’ 2-1 win against Los Angeles on Saturday, while Richmond’s Andrew Dykstra earned selection after making a number of key saves to earn the Kickers a point against Los Angeles on Friday.

Los Angeles’ Shay Spitz earned a berth in the midfield after his industriousness helped the Blues rally to claim a late equalizer against the Kickers on Friday night. Pittsburgh’s Matt Dallman was also selected after recording assists on both goals by the Riverhounds in their 2-2 draw with Dayton. The Dutch Lions’ Tjeerd Westdijk also earned selection, scoring the game-tying goal and recording an assist in the same contest.

Orlando’s Erik Ustruck was selected after scoring the game-winning goal for the Lions in their 1-0 win against Rochester, while Harrisburg’s Don Anding rounded out the quintet after a standout performance that saw him assist on Sainey Touray’s opening goal and prove a threat for much of the game down the flank. Completing the side is Orlando’s Dom Dwyer, who earns his fourth consecutive selection after scoring another pair of goals to take his league-leading total to 12 in the Lions’ 2-2 draw with Harrisburg.

The USL PRO season continues on Thursday night as the Charlotte Eagles head west to take on Phoenix FC at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium at 10:30 p.m. ET. Friday night brings a pair of games, with the Richmond Kickers hosting the Harrisburg City Islanders in a must-see clash from City Stadium at 7 p.m. ET, and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds hosting Antigua Barracuda FC at 7 p.m. ET at Highmark Stadium.

The Charleston Battery host the Rochester Rhinos on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. ET, with Pat Ercoli returning to the sidelines for his first league game as coach for the Rhinos. Also on Saturday, the Wilmington Hammerheads begin their Florida swing with a visit to Orlando City at 7:30 p.m. ET, with the night being capped by Charlotte’s visit to the Los Angeles Blues at 10:30 p.m. ET.

The weekend concludes on Sunday evening as Antigua Barracuda FC visit the Dayton Dutch Lions at 6:30 p.m. ET. VSI Tampa Bay FC then returns to league action as it hosts Wilmington at Plant City Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET.

Every game of the USL PRO season can be seen on USLNation.com, with live updates also available via Twitter (@USLPRO), Facebook and Google+.

USL PRO Team of the Week

Pos

Player

Team

Highlights

<span style="font-size:9.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";
Kickers Move On To Third Round

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Kickers claimed a 4-1 win against Icon FC in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night, setting up a third-round contest where they will face the club’s MLS affiliate D.C. United on Tuesday, May 28. After conceding a ninth-minute Argjent Duka goal, the Kickers rallied behind a Joseph Ngwenya penalty kick and a pair of Stanley Nyazamba tallies to oust their USASA opponent from the tournament.

Kickoff for the U.S. Open Cup Third Round match-up is set for 7 p.m. at City Stadium and tickets are on sale now for $15, youth and adult, at RichmondKickers.com.

Searching for their second upset in as many weeks, Icon grabbed an early lead, capitalizing on their first chance of the night when defender Kevin Garcia eluded defenders on the left wing and fed the ball into Duka’s path. Duka dummied the ball as Nelson Becerra played him in behind the defense as Kickers goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra came off his line to challenge the charging forward. He beat his last mark and slotted the ball through to the far right corner inside the first 10 minutes of the opening whistle.

The visitors’ celebrations were short-lived, however, as the Kickers leveled the score two minutes later. Ngwenya held up the ball at the top of the box and played it to Nyazamba who beat the ‘keeper in similar fashion to draw his side even.

Soon after, Kickers midfielder Luke Vercollone warded off a feisty Becerra in Icon territory and threaded the ball through to Nate Robinson. The Kickers playmaker attempted a shot from the penalty area but goalkeeper Chris Duggan sprung into action to make the save.

The Kickers were rewarded for their offensive pressure in the 24th minute, gaining the advantage for the first time of the night. Sandwiched between a pair of defenders, Ngwenya was brought down in the box near the touchline and made no mistake from the spot, burying a low driven ball just inside the right post.

After conceding a second goal, Icon pressed forward and tested Dykstra several times before the end of the half. Attempting to benefit from a dangerously positioned free kick, Jonathan Yazo delivered a curving ball on target, forcing Dykstra to reach to his right to wrap it around the near post in the 31st minute. Dykstra came up big once again two minutes later when Teddy Nizolek got on the end of an inswinging free kick from the right flank, to bat the ball over the endline.

Following the restart, the Kickers renewed their pace and pressured Duggan in the 51st minute when Robinson served up a blazing cross through the box, connecting with Vercollone in the air but his close-range header was thwarted by the unwavering Icon goalkeeper. Vercollone was integral again seconds later when his cross found Nyazamba at the top of the box. Duggan punched the resulting shot from harm’s way, with the rebound falling to Robinson but his well-timed side volley glanced inches over the crossbar.

The Kickers extended their lead in the 62nd minute when Ngwenya received the ball at the top of the box and played it wide to an awaiting Mike Callahan deep on the right wing. The Kickers midfielder lined up a dangerous cross that took a big deflection off an Icon defender and over Duggan’s outstretched hands.

As regulation neared, Nyazamba added his second goal of the night to close out the 4-1 scoreline. Battling for the ball on the left edge of the box, he stepped around his defender and lofted the ball into the far upper 90 to carry the Kickers through to the Third Round of the U.S. Open Cup.

Before taking on D.C. United in the tournament next week, the Richmond Kickers return to regular season action this Friday night when they host the Harrisburg City Islanders at City Stadium at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at RichmondKickers.com.

Orlando Earns Victory In Ocala

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

OCALA, Fla. — Behind one goal in either half, Orlando City SC advanced past the PDL’s Ocala Stampede 2-1 on Tuesday night in the second round of the 100th edition of Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Forest High School. With the win, the Lions will host Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Colorado Rapids next Tuesday, May 28, at Fifth Third Bank Field at the Florida Citrus Bowl.

“I thought our first half performance was very good,” said Orlando City Head Coach Adrian Heath. “We gifted them (Ocala) a goal in the second half and let them back in the game. But at the end of the day we bring the Rapids to Orlando next week and it will be a good game for us.”

The Lions came out on the attack to begin the match, with league-leading scorer Dom Dwyer nearly converting chances early on, including a bicycle kick in the 20th minute of play. The Sporting Kansas City loanee and the Lions frontline continued to press, with it paying off just past the halfway point of the first half.

After an Ocala throw-in, Erik Ustruck took away control from the Stampede, passing his attempt into the box where an Ocala defender knocked a deflection to Dwyer. The striker then lobbed the deflection up and over goalkeeper Lex Craggs, putting Orlando up 1-0.

Just after the second half began, the Lions went up 2-0 after an Adama Mbengue strike in the 50th minute. The midfielder found space just inside the 18-yard box, blasting a low strike past the Ocala defense and into the right corner for the two-goal advantage.

Ocala responded with a goal of their own in the 58th minute, with midfielder Christian Blandon scoring after Orlando goalkeeper Jon Kempin made two diving saves in a penalty situation. The Stampede were awarded a penalty after Kempin took down an Ocala striker inside the box, with the Sporting KC loanee making two saves initially, only for Blandon to secure the follow up and cut the lead down to 2-1.

Orlando regained composure after the goal, retaining possession while getting multiple chances at a third score. The last part of the match was a back-and-forth affair, with the Lions ultimately holding strong and ending the match with the victory.

The club plays one regular season match on Saturday night against the Wilmington Hammerheads before hosting the Rapids in the third round of U.S. Open Cup play on Tuesday night at Fifth Third Bank at the Florida Citrus Bowl. Tuesday’s game marks the first time Orlando has hosted an MLS team at home in the knockout tournament, with the Lions traveling to opponent’s venues in the third round of the past two seasons.

Tickets will be available on www.Orlandocitysoccer.com/tickets.
Des Moines Menace News Release -- www.menacesoccer.com

Tuesday, May 21, 2013

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Des Moines Menace fans, make plans to pack the bus for Kansas City.

Put it on your calendars: Tuesday, May 28 – Des Moines Menace against Sporting KC at Sporting Park. For the first time in the franchise’s 20 seasons, the Menace takes center stage in a Major League Soccer venue.

A nail-biting, 1-0, upset of Minnesota United FC on Tuesday night set the scene for one of the most anticipated matches in Menace history. Under rainy skies at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium, Brandon Fricke’s headed goal in the 86th minute lifted Des Moines past the pros, and into the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

The Menace are headed to Kansas City, Kan., to the state-of-the-art, $200-million Sporting Park, for a 7:30 p.m. CT match against the reigning Open Cup champions.

Can head coach Mike Jeffries’ crew hang with an MLS team? On this night, they got past the North American Soccer League’s 2012 runner-up – the same group that knocked the Menace out of the cup’s second round a year ago.

“It was fantastic,” Jeffries said. “The guys came out with the right attitude and effort. They knew what they wanted, and they made it happen.”

Jimmy Tulloch set up the game-winning goal with less than five minutes left in regulation, sending in a well-placed corner kick. From the far corner of the six-yard box, Fricke timed his jump in perfect rhythm. The fourth-year defender from Grimes nailed the ball just inside the left post, beyond the reach of Minnesota goalkeeper Matt VanOekel.

“We had put pressure on them all game with corners,” Fricke said. “We were just finally able to connect on one.”

Fricke’s teammates mobbed him before he could sprint all the way back to midfield. Tulloch celebrated by motioning to shush the home fans. Minnesota forward Pablo Campos took issue with this. The NASL’s 2012 Most Valuable Player chased after Tulloch and gave him a chest bump; the center referee intervened.

In the final minutes, Des Moines pulled everyone back and held on for dear life. Minnesota attacked with a series of shots, including one that pinged off the cross bar. Menace goalie Scott Angevine secured his third straight 1-0 shutout win – and a chance to play against his former team. Angevine, a Kansas City native, played for his hometown MLS side in 2012.

Tulloch has used corner kicks to assist goals in the Menace’s last two matches. He headed in the goal in a 1-0 win over Madison in the Cup’s first round on May 15, and he nearly scored again in the 23rd minute against Minnesota. VanOekel’s backward, diving save knocked the ball over the goal, deflecting Tulloch’s hooking chip shot.

The visitors caught a break when Campos’ apparent goal was disallowed in the 68th minute, called back on an offside call. Minnesota took 16 shots – double the Menace’s total – but not one found the back of the net.

Des Moines improves to 10-7 all-time in the Open Cup, including a 6-5 mark against professional teams and a 4-3 record in road matches. In 2005 and 2006, the Menace lost fourth-round matches against the Kansas City Wizards. Those are the only two occasions Des Moines has faced an MLS team in the Cup, and neither of those matches was played in the Wizards’ home stadium.

MAN of the MATCH, presented by Seneca Companies: Brandon Fricke, whose second goal with the Menace will not soon be forgotten. Fricke, a defender from Grimes, attends Butler University. He played for the Kanas City Wizards’ youth academy.

UP NEXT: Des Moines hops back into PDL action on Saturday (May 25), for the second of six straight road matches. The Menace faces Heartland Division rival St. Louis in a 5 p.m. grudge match at Tony Glavin Soccer Complex in St. Peters, Mo.
The Menace’s next home match is Saturday, June 8 against Springfield on Youth Soccer Night.

BUS TRIP: The Menace organization is working to make bus trips, including admission into Tuesday’s game, available to fans on a first-come, first-served basis.
Tuesday, May 21, 2013

READING, Pa. -- Reading United created a little bit of Cup magic on Tuesday night. On warm and humid late evening, United earned a historic 1-0 win over USL PRO’s Harrisburg City Islanders in front of their faithful fans. The win helped Reading maintain its perfect start to the 2013 season and also helped them book a place in the third round of the 100th U.S. Open Cup, where they will face Major League Soccer powerhouse, the New York Red Bulls.

United entered the match against their fellow Philadelphia Union affiliate riding a tremendous wave of momentum. Reading started the season by scoring 13 goals while not conceding a single goal to open the 2013 campaign with a 3-0 record in all competitions. After defeating FC Lehigh Valley United, United Head Coach Brendan Burke acknowledge the challenge posed by Harrisburg. “It’s a great opportunity,” said Burke. “No real pressure on us, but it’s a big mountain to climb in terms of getting a result.”

As they had in their three previous matches, United began the match aggressively, putting the pro side on its heels early in the match. United backs Jonny Dolezal and Ben Sweat attacked down the City Islanders flanks while forwards Larry Ndjock and Mario Pinto pressed the Harrisburg back four.

Reading’s hustle and hardwork paid off in the ninth minute. Mario Pinto, the PDL Player of the Week last week, got under a long ball from goalkeeper John McCarthy. The bouncing ball took a deflection which Pinto volleyed past a helpless Nick Noble to stake Reading to an early 1-0 lead.

Harrisburg went in search of an equalizer and began applying pressure on Reading. United left back Ben Sweat was more than a match for former Philadelphia Union midfield Morgan Langley, who was frequently dispossed and left frustrated by the talented defender from South Florida.

The City Islanders had a golden opportunity to level the match in the 39th minute. Lucky Mkosana had an open header on goal, only to see McCarthy flash across the net and palm away the big forward’s effort.

With Reading 45 minutes from an Open Cup third round date with the New York Red Bulls, Burke made no adjustments to United’s tactics. “We said mentally, you guys need to stay switched on,” Burke said of his halftime team talk. “This game will turn on a counter-attack, this game will turn on someone falling asleep on a dead ball. You need to make sure that there are no mental lapses.”

Harrisburg came out of halftime on the attack. The United back line was under constant pressure for much of the second half. In need of a goal, Islanders Head Coach Bill Becher turned to his leading scorer Sainey Touray and Yann Ekra in the 61st minute. Intent on holding the lead, Burke countered by deploying holding midfield Fatai Alashe for the tiring Ndjock.

It was end-to-end stuff as the Islanders surged forward, only to be caught when Reading was able to launch a counterattack through the speedy Darius Madison. The Union academy product troubled the City Islanders backline with his pace and his footwork. A sequence in the 83rd minute saw Madison tip-toe his way through several Harrisburg defenders before forcing Noble to make a fingertip save.

It was almost heartbreak for Reading in the 85th minute when Jimmy Ockford fouled Touray inches outside the Reading penalty area. With the ball in a very dangerous spot, Mkosana’s free kick went straight into the wall. The rebound fell to one of his teammates, but his shot was smothered by McCarthy.

Under relentless siege by Harrisburg over the final minutes, Reading’s defense held firm and kept the Islanders off the scoreboard. Burke acknowledge the fine play of central defender Damion Lowe in helping to preserve the win. “He was my man of the match,” said Burke following the game.

Referee Ian Bongaardt’s final whistle signaled a historic victory for United and set off a celebration amongst the Reading supporters. The win was Reading first against a professional opponent in U.S. Open Cup play and avenges a crushing 2-1 loss to Harrisburg in the 2011 U.S. Open Cup. “I’m just very happy for our boys to have accomplished what they did tonight,” Burke shared following his post game huddle with the elated Reading squad.

The victory also means Reading will travel to Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. to face the New York Red Bulls next Wednesday, May 29th. “It’s like a dream come true, to play against Juninho and all their stars,” said Mario Pinto following the game.

Reading United return home on Friday, June 7th when they host the Philadelphia Union at Don Thomas Stadium. Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tickets are available at www.readingunitedac.com. Reading United offer 2013 Game Day Youth Packages, Group Discount Packages, Birthday Parties and Fundraising Ticket Packages.
Tuesday, May 21, 2013

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — FC Tucson had done everything it could to beat San Antonio in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup. But as the players waited for San Antonio’s Kevin Harmes to take their final penalty kick, all the club could do was rely on their opposition to find out their fate.

Harmes sent his penalty kick into the night sky and FC Tucson moved on to the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after a 2-2 draw in regulation and a 4-3 win in penalty kicks. The win makes FC Tucson the first club in Arizona history to advance to the third round of the U.S Open Cup.

“It’s big time,” said FC Tucson midfielder Ricardo Velazco. “It’s big time for Arizona. It’s big time for the staff, for all the FC Tucson fans and for me. … This goes to Arizona. This goes out to all of Tucson and the supporters who have been behind us. This goes out to all of them.”

FC Tucson was moments from winning the match 2-1 at the end of regulation but a late handball call in the box gave the Scorpions new life as Hans Denissen converted the penalty kick to tie the match.

“I talked to everyone and tried to calm everyone down (and tell them) to play our game,” said Eli Galbraith-Knapp about his reaction to the penalty kick. “And we did. And we came back and fought for 120 minutes and we got the win.”

But the final goal of regulation may not have happened if it had not been for the goalkeeping of Dallas Jaye. In the 59th minute, Jaye leapt to punch a shot over the bar to keep the match 1-1. Then in the 88th minute, Jaye managed to stop a shot from close range before it got tangled in a web of flying legs before finally being cleared.

Even the handball call was the result of a Jaye save. During the sequence, a Scorpions player fired a close-range shot, but Jaye pushed away toward his left before it hit an FC Tucson player for the handball call. Then Jaye made two more big saves in extra time.

“It fires up the team,” said captain Travis Campbell about Jaye’s performance. “That gets the team going. He made some great, huge saves: one-v-one and everything. It was a real big boost for us on the field.”

San Antonio opened the scoring when Harmes came screaming into the box and headed a corner inside the near post past a helpless Jaye. The score remained 1-0 until the 57th minute when Velazco cracked a shot from just outside the box into the bottom corner of the net.

Then in the 64th minute forward Saeed Robinson appeared to score FC Tucson’s second goal of the match but it was then called off because Robinson was caught offside. Three minutes later Conner Bevans found Robinson right at the far post and Robinson tapped the ball in to give FC Tucson a 2-1 lead.

FC Tucson will now play the Houston Dynamo in Houston on Wednesday, May 29 in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup.

Phoenix FC News Release -- www.phoenixfc.com

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

PHOENIX -- Phoenix FC's first league match in almost two weeks pits the Wolves against the Charlotte Eagles on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. PT at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium in a match that will see forward Darren Mackie in the Wolves' starting lineup for the first time this season. Phoenix FC is also hosting Military Appreciation Night.

Former Scottish Premier League standout Mackie was the first player ever signed to play for Phoenix FC, and he was intended to be the centerpiece of a high-octane offense for the Wolves. Mackie suffered a groin injury early in training camp and has since been sidelined, making only one brief appearance off the bench. His addition to the starting lineup has been highly anticipated both in Phoenix and in international circles, where "The Dazzler" has a substantial following of devoted fans.

Phoenix FC will also kick off the Memorial Day weekend with a Military Appreciation Night by offering a free ticket to all active and retired military members. Proper military identification must be presented at the Phoenix FC ticket booth beginning at 6 p.m. to receive one (1) free admission.

Phoenix FC hasn't played a USL PRO match since May 11 at Dayton. The Wolves (2-5-2) have eight points from nine matches but are only two points out of a playoff spot with 17 matches remaining on their schedule. The seventh-place Eagles have 12 points from a 3-0-3 record, so their spot in the standings is somewhat misleading having played fewer matches than all but one other club.

Phoenix FC made late charges in its two most recent league matches at Dayton and Pittsburgh but just missed a draw in each. The Wolves led until the 82nd minute in Tucson.

Aaron King, Peabo and Tommy Ramos scored their first goals of the season at Pittsburgh and Dayton. King scored one in each game and shares the club lead in league goals with Diego Faria and Netinho. Faria has three goals in all competitions to lead the Wolves. , while midfielder Scott Morrison has played every minute of every league match, 810 total minutes plus stoppage time.

Charlotte got a goal from defender Shaun Francis, a former MLS player with the Columbus Crew, to defeat defending USL PRO champion Charleston last week. The Eagles then took a 3-0 victory on Tuesday night in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup against the Sounders FC U-23 of the Premier Development League.

This could present a challenge, as the Eagles must play, then go from North Carolina to Arizona the next day and face Phoenix FC the following evening.

Other Eagles to watch are forward Cuitlahuac "Christian" Meza, goalkeeper Eric Reed and top reserve Sergio Villasenor of Mexico, who played for the ill-fated but memorable Indios de Juarez during their short-lived run in Mexico's First Division and who faced his current team in the U.S. Open Cup a year ago while with the El Paso Patriots of the PDL.

Ottawa Fury News Release -- www.ottawafury.com

Wednesday, May 22, 2013

OTTAWA, Ont. -- After falling a goal shy from reaching the PDL Final Four in 2012, the Ottawa Fury are not just eyeballing their fourth division title in five years in 2013, but they are taking aim at the PDL Championship. The trio of Stephen O’Kane, Jason Whiting and Marc Lapointe return after spending the off-season building what is arguably the best roster that the Fury have ever seen - on paper - and the 2013 season will determine if having depth, talent and experience at every position is a recipe for a PDL Championship.

Despite their successes in 2012, O’Kane and company only have seven returning players for the 2013 campaign led by veteran Will Beaugé, who currently sits at 96 career points with the Fury, and striker Carlo Basso, who finished second to Beaugé in team scoring last season. Another returning striker is local product Robbie Murphy. The Fury’s backline see’s the return of Sandro Rajkovic and Peter Manginas, while the last line of defence has Nils Carlson and local product Chad Bush back between the pipes.

While the Fury will have several new faces for 2013, they won’t be short on PDL experience. Carl Haworth joins the Fury after capturing the PDL Championship last season with FC London and should provide ample offence and leadership for the club in 2013. Another major coup for the Fury was landing a pair of captains from a pair of top PDL squads from last year - Jordian Farahani who captained the Thunder Bay Chill and Joseph Dawkins who captained the Ocala Stampede. Jacob Barron joins the Fury from Reading United and former Capital City FC players Emir Zrnic and Francis Letourneau return to Ottawa after spending the 2012 season with the Chicago Inferno. Shaun Foster, who plies his trade at Hofstra University, joins the club from rivals the Jersey Express who the Fury eliminated from the post season back in 2010.

The team’s international contingent boasts some impressive talents led by defender Artur Piperkov and midfielder Yannis Becker who both came through the Werder Bremen Youth Academy. French midfielder Loic Miliani joins the club after capturing the NAIA Championship with Belhaven this past fall and Kozarac, Bosnia native Maid Memic comes to the Fury after captaining NCAA Division 1 School Hofstra University. The team’s British connection includes a pair of NCAA Division 1 midfielders in Eddie Jones from the University of Dayton and Jon Barden from James Madison University.

The experience runs deep for some of the Canadian and American talents that have also been added for 2013. Kennedy Owusu Ansah has played for RoPS Roviemi in Finland and was also capped four times for the Canadian U20 team. Oakville, Ont. native Niko Jelicic comes to the Fury after leading a major turnaround as captain at NAIA school Holy Cross while Jacob Van Compernolle is another standout defender who plies his trade at UNC Wilmington. Goalkeeper Barrett Nielsen joins the Fury from Lander University where form Fury captain Jamie Ramm played, and the club is also excited to have Gatineau native and Fury Youth Academy graduate Justin Maheu back in the fold after he spent the last couple years in Germany with the Fortuna Dusseldorf Reserves.

With depth, talent and experience at every position the Fury have assembled all of the necessary ingredients to challenge for their first-ever PDL Championship.

The Wildcats struck for four first-half goals against the visiting North Jersey Valkyries (0-1-0, 0 points) before turning to a defensive mindset in the second half, earning a 4-2 victory and three critical points against its Northeastern Conference foe.

The Wildcats opened the scoring in the 11th minute, starting off a crafty possession from midfielder Claudia Vasquez of the Puerto Rican National Team. After acquiring the ball on the left flank near the center circle, Vasquez looked upfield and delivered a well-placed strike onto the feet of a streaking Jess Fuccello. The UPenn graduate then one-touched the ball forward and raced through a hole in the North Jersey defense to find herself alone in front of Valkyries netminder Lianne Maldanado. Once seeing the situation, she chipped the ball over the head of Maldanado to give her team an early 1-0 advantage.

Fifteen minutes later, Fuccello put herself on the other side of the stat sheet, hooking up fellow striker Daija Griffin in the right zone of the penalty area. Once gaining possession, the speedy Piscataway native turned on the jets and continued driving to that side. She then quickly stopped on a dime, which froze Maldanado, wasting no time in firing a right-footed shot into the wide side netting to make it 2-0 for the Wildcats.

North Jersey was able to respond in the 28th minute, with midfielder Ashley Clarke breaking through the left side of the Wildcats box before feeding forward to early substitute Danielle Schulmann. The crafty striker then maneuvered herself around New Jersey goalkeeper Sage Dovale with the ball at her feet, making it to where she could easily tap in a goal with her left foot.

Despite the three goals in the first 30 minutes of the match, the first-half scoring was still far from over. First, Griffin made some room towards the top of the box in the 42nd minute before quickly turning to find Fuccello. The New Jersey native then touched around a defender and fired a hard shot towards the far post that ripped into the netting, making it 3-1 in favor of the host side.

Substitute Jesse McDonough later extended that lead to 4-1 in the waning seconds of the half, registering a stoppage-time tally. After distribution came from Vasquez, she gained possession from deep out and caught Maldanado overcommitting to the long ball she received. Seeing the opportunity in front of her, McDonough quickly chipped a ball over the opposing netminder's head, and the Wildcats held a 4-1 advantage when the two sides broke for intermission.

Only one goal was recorded in the second half, and it was from the feet of the visiting Valkyries. After earning a free kick from about 30 yards out, North Jersey midfielder Nickolette Driesse stepped over the ball. Sensing a bit of an opening, Driesse then put a near perfect strike on a shot attempt, sending it over the New Jersey wall and ricocheting into the net after hitting the nearside post.

After seceding that goal to make it 4-2, the Wildcats buckled down on the defensive end of the field to make sure no more damage was done. Both sides turned up the aggression as well, and a handful of yellow cards were revealed as a result.

Next up for the Wildcats is a road outing on Saturday, June 1, when the team travels to Virginia Beach to play the Piranhas and then the Fredericksburg Impact the following day. The next home match for New Jersey is on Saturday, June 8, when it hosts the Piranhas at 2 p.m. at St. John Vianney High School in Holmdel.

Tickets for all Wildcats home matches are now available and can be attained by calling 732-298-7619. Individual game tickets as well as team and family packages are available.

However, Emma Kruse stood tall in net for K-W and came up big on a London corner kick in the 37th minute and a free kick in the 45th minute to finish the half.

K-W United came out flying in the second half, with Kruse playing big in net and Scotland native Anne Houliston having two big chances. First, she broke down the left side, but was called offside in the 72nd minute. Five minutes later, Houliston had a clean shot on London goalkeeper Miranda Horn, but Horn got a hand on it to send it wide.

The teams played even for the following 10 minutes until in the 88th, when London's Alex Charlebois beat Kruse to put the visitors up 1-0.

In the 90th minute, however, Murchie's goal brought them even to pick up a point.

"I just hauled my butt up there and luckily Courtney [Conrad] dug in with the goalie and I was just there for the rebound and got it in," Murchie said.

Wednesday's game was K-W United FC's first game, and the team has only been training together for two weeks. The team is comprised of elite women's players from throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe.

The W-League team's next game is next Wednesday at home against the Toronto Lady Lynx. Game time is 7 p.m. and tickets are still on sale.

Q&A With the Rush's Erik Bushey

Thursday, May 23, 2013

The Colorado Rush are in their fourth season in the W-League and continue to produce some of the top female soccer talent in the country. One of the most recognizable club brands in North America, the Rush count rising U.S. Women’s National Team star Lindsey Horan among their alumni.

Rush Technical Director Erik Bushey recently took the time to answer our questions about owning and operating a W-League franchise.

What inspired you to acquire a USL franchise?

It is important for us to have a ‘first team,’ a ‘top of the pyramid,’ if you will, for our youth club. Youth development is fundamental to who we are. A place for elite players to come back and play for our club is also a critical component for us.

What is your favorite aspect of owning a USL franchise/team?

It brings a professional element to our club and a different kind of exposure for our top youth athletes.

What differentiates your franchise from others?

Our team is comprised of youth players, college and former professional players. On several occasions our starting lineup has had an average age of 18 years. Eighty to ninety percent of our players are currently or are former Rush products.

What words of advice would you provide to potential franchise owners?

For me personally, there is nothing more important than the soccer product that is placed on the field. Our young players need a quality game with good people to look up to. However, from an overall standpoint, it is not the quality of soccer that will encourage fans to return and potential fans to come, it is the environment that franchises create. Figure out a way to put on a show. Soccer is not enough to entertain. Create the environment.

Where do you see your franchise in 3-5 years?

I’d like to say that I see us as a consistent division champion competing for a national championship. I expect us to have a consistent model of using the W-League to help us develop the best youth players in the country, to provide a quality environment for those players filling the void between their college seasons, and successfully utilizing senior players from around the world and former pros from here in the states.

What is the most challenging aspect of your franchise/team?

No surprise here, but finances are critical. Trying to find a balance between recruiting elite players and all the logistics that accompany that, treating our players like true professionals (equipment, gear, travel, etc.) and ending with a bottom line that is favorable to club and owners.

What is your franchise’s greatest accomplishment to date?

With our unique setup we have finished as high as third in the table and are in contention for playoffs each year, it seems. We are open to top players coming into our club from all around the world but take great pride in the impact we have made by utilizing our Colorado Rush players and Colorado Rush alumni.

What traits do you find valuable when adding members to your staff?

Those traits that match our club’s 11 Core Values: Accountability, Advice, Empathy, Enjoyment, Humility, Leadership, Passion, Respect, Safety, Tenacity and Unity. This is what we preach to our players on a daily basis. I hope our staff can prove to be an example. We hope to help develop good players to be good people [and vice versa!].

How does your previous employment/business experience translate into running a successful sports franchise?

Admittedly, we are young. Our infrastructure has long been in place prior to the formation of our W-League team. We have a deep staff [both technical and administrative] that, though fundamentally has been charged with the responsibility of running a youth organization, has been able to transition somewhat seamlessly into a senior pro/am operating group.

Who has been the greatest influence in your career? Please explain.

Our President, Tim Schulz, has no doubt been a tremendous influence on our operations on and off the field. We are a part of the largest youth soccer club in the world; that is a result of his drive and tenacity. We hope our program embodies this every day.

Thursday, May 23, 2013

PHOENIX -- Phoenix FC snapped a three-match losing streak in earning a 2-2 draw with the Charlotte Eagles on Thursday night at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. Midfielder Scott Morrison, celebrating his 29th birthday, scored on a brilliant free kick in the 17th minute, then assisted teammate Donny Toia for Toia's curling 25-yard shot into the far corner of the goal in the 38th minute.

The Eagles took the early lead despite the highly-anticipated return of Phoenix FC forward Darren Mackie, who was making his first start of the season after appearing in only one other match as a reserve. Mackie, who played all 90 minutes, made an impact right away with a run and shot on goal in the first minute of the match.

Christian Ramirez got between two defenders and scored in the fifth minute. But Phoenix FC was undaunted, as leading goal scorer Diego Faria had his open shot go just wide in the 10th minute. The Wolves seemed to lure the Eagles into a lull with a delay just before Morrison let fly with his free kick. It went in to tie the score.

Mackie was a presence to be accounted for, especially in the first half. But in the 35th minute, Drew Yates crossed to Sergio Villasenor, and the Mexican national was in front of the goal to knock the ball past goalkeeper Andrew Weber of the Wolves.

Phoenix FC's Toia had the ball on the wing far from the goal in the 38th minute when he let fly with a ball into the goal area. It was hit so well that Eagles goalkeeper Eric Reed lost it and the ball bounced into the goal.

The second half saw the two teams battle for possession, but it was Phoenix FC that had the upper hand more often. Faria had a shot from point blank range blocked in the 55th minute, and the crowd of 1,903 gasped as substitute Peabo Doue made a fine move to clear some space but saw his shot fly over the cross bar.

Phoenix FC outshot the Eagles (3-0-4) 9-7 and Weber made four saves to Reed's three. The match also marked the debut of defender Isaiah Schafer, who came on as a sub for the Wolves in the 72nd minute.

Phoenix FC is on the road for its next four matches, starting with back-to-back gamesMay 31 and June 1 at Richmond and Wilmington. The club's next home match is June 15 against the Real Salt Lake reserves.

Thursday, May 23, 2013

PORTLAND, Ore. – Second-half goals from defender Eric Miller and forward Reinaldo Brenes helped the Portland Timbers U-23s defeat division-rival Vancouver Whitecaps U-23 2-0 before 3,370 fans on Thursday afternoon at JELD-WEN Field.

The 3,370 on hand for a Providence Health & Fitness Day at JELD-WEN Field was the second-largest attendance in the Premier Development League this season. Portland has drawn the two largest crowds in the league in 2013, with the team’s Health & Fitness Day match on May 16 against Sounders FC U23 drawing 3,681 fans.

With a third straight win to open the regular season, the Timbers U-23s (3-0-0, 9pts) move into a tie for first place in the PDL’s Northwest Division with Victoria Highlanders FC. Whitecaps FC U-23 (1-2-0, 3pts) remain in third place in the division.

After trading scoring chances in the second half, the Timbers U-23s broke through in the 63rd minute. A free kick from midfielder Jose Ribas was deflected away by a Whitecaps FC U-23 defender, and the loose ball fell to the foot of Miller just outside the penalty area. Miller drilled the half-volley past Whitecaps FC U-23 goalkeeper Simon Thomas for his second goal of the season.

The Timbers U-23s added a second goal 15 minutes from time, when a long cross by Miller found Brenes near the right post. Brenes, who had come on as a substitute in the 74th minute, calmly slipped the ball past Thomas to give the Timbers U-23s the insurance goal.

Timbers U-23s goalkeeper David Meves recorded three first-half saves to earn his second shutout of the season. Meves was tested from distance twice by Whitecaps FC U-23 midfielders Harpreet Lakhan and Gagandeep Dosanjh. Portland’s defense held Vancouver to just two shots in the second half.

A late goal mouth scramble in first-half stoppage time saw the Timbers U-23s with a chance to take a lead into halftime. After a Whitecaps FC U-23 turnover, Timbers U-23s forward Clark Phillips sent a cross into the box which resulted in a blocked shot attempted by Ribas. The deflection fell to forward Jaime Velasco and his follow-up effort from just outside the six-yard box was sent over the goal.

The Timbers U-23s play host to North Sound SeaWolves FC on Friday, May 31, at JELD-WEN Field as part of their third and final Providence Health & Fitness Day of the season; kickoff is 11 a.m. (Pacific). Tickets are available for purchase at the JELD-WEN Field box office and online at www.portlandtimbers.com.

Richmond Kickers News Release -- www.richmondkickers.com

Thursday, May 23, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Kickers look to continue their undefeated season on Friday night when they host the Harrisburg City Islanders at City Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. and the gates open at 6 p.m. with live music from All In, draft beer trucks, food trucks and family zone. Tickets are on sale now at RichmondKickers.com.

“We have dropped valuable points at home over our last three games, twice conceding leads,” said Leigh Cowlishaw, Richmond Kickers Director of Soccer. “If we are to continue chasing the top teams in the league, then winning on Friday night is vital.”

Harrisburg comes to Richmond this week for their only match up of the season at City Stadium. The two clubs met three times during the 2012 campaign with the Kickers narrowly edging the series 1-0-2. After a pair of home and away draws, Richmond took the rubber match 2-1 last August.

The Kickers enter Friday’s game three days after the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Second Round match against USASA side Icon FC. After conceding an early lead, the Kickers dispatched Icon 4-1 on a Stanley Nyazamba double and a Joseph Ngwenya penalty. The Kickers moved on to the Third Round to face MLS side D.C. United at home next Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, the City Islanders are coming off a Second Round game of their own against USL PDL side Reading United. Harrisburg were not so lucky, however, as Reading's Mario Pinto put in a volley to give the PDL side a 1-0 lead, marking the first time that Harrisburg has been eliminated from the U.S. Open Cup without winning a game.

Players to Watch
Kickers: After scoring the lone goal for the Kickers in a 1-1 draw against the LA Blues last Friday, midfielder Joseph Ngwenya further cemented himself as the club's leading scorer this season with six goals. The former Houston Dynamo and D.C. United man has averaged a tally every 63 minutes that he's been on the field, with a 1.2 goals per game average in league play.

As one of three players to appear in every game this year, defender William Yomby anchors the Kickers defensive unit that has allowed just seven goals in the span of seven games.

Defender Sascha Goerres is also another Kickers player to have made an appearance in every league game this season, posting 440 minutes over seven matches. The veteran defender has been a cornerstone of the Kickers organization since signing in 2005 and pulls double duty as both a player and an assistant coach.

City Islanders: Former West Virginia goalkeeper Nick Noble has been a stalwart for the City Islanders this season. The former Chicago Fire draft pick finished the 2012 season with a 1.273 GAA, and has only allowed six goals during the 2013 campaign. He came to the City Islanders last year from the LA Galaxy and finished the season as a nominee for USL Goalkeeper of the Year.

After notching two goals and assisting a third in their game against Antigua Barracuda FC, Sainey Touray continued a remarkable season. The former New York Red Bulls forward and Gambian U-20 International has been in a scoring mood for the season.

Defender Colin Zizzi is entering his sophomore season for the City Islanders, after coming on as a rookie from American University. The Carlisle, Pa. native registered 12 starts last year, and looks to play a more integral role in Harrisburg's fortunes this year, already notching a goal in five matches played.

Kickers to host UEFA Champion's League Viewing Party
The Richmond Kickers will be hosting viewing parties on Saturday, May 25 at two Buffalo Wild Wings locations for the UEFA Champions League Final. Kickers Pro players, coaches, and staff will be there to watch the game at Buffalo Wild Wings in Midlothian on 12056 Southshore Pointe Drive and at Buffalo Wild Wings in Glen Allen on 1090 Virginia Center Parkway. Kick off is planned for 2:45pm. Fans are encouraged to wear Kickers jerseys to take advantage of special discounts and prizes.
