USL announces Week 17 honors
W-League Championship All-Tournament Team also released
Tuesday, August 10, 2004

TAMPA, FL - United Soccer Leagues announced Tuesday the Week 17 Teams of the Week for the A-League and Pro Soccer League, honoring Virginia Beach's Carlos Garcia and Charlotte's Jacob Coggins as the Players of the Week. Cal Cougars' Ashley Lundberg and Seacoast United's Jonathon Harris were honored as the Super Y-League Players of the Week. USL also announced the W-League Championship All-Tournament Team.

Chasing after a playoff spot, the Virginia Beach Mariners picked up two key victories on the week, their first road wins on the season, as four of the five ahead of them failed to earn maximum points. Leading the way with two goals and two assists in the wins was Carlos Garcia.

Garcia opened the week with the equalizer in the 43rd minute of their fixture in Toronto Monday as the team went on to a 2-1 win.

He closed the week with a standout performance in a shootout with the Atlanta Silverbacks, tallying a goal and two assists in a 4-3 overtime decision Sunday. Garcia opened the scoring in the ninth minute only to see Atlanta rally back and take a 2-1 lead in the 18th minute on a pair of goals from Mac Cozier. Garcia then set up two consecutive Mariner strikes a minute apart, finding Hamisi Amani-Dove in the 26th and Dante Washington in the 27th.

The Charlotte Eagles capped their regular season home schedule with a 6-0 thumping of the Long Island Rough Riders Saturday. The home schedule closed just as it opened with Jacob Coggins dominating play.

Coggins, who registered two goals and an assist in a 3-0 win over Pittsburgh in their home and season opener for the first Player of the Week honor of the season, shredded the Long Island defense for four goals in the match. He tallied the first two goals in the 4th and 20th minutes and took the lead to 5-0 with tallies in the 65th and 68th minutes before exiting the match a minute later.

Coggins will likely finish as the league leader in points (currently 46) and goals (19), entering the final weekend with 13 point and five goal leads in the respective tables. He also has a shot at sweeping the offensive statistical categories, trailing New Hampshire's Richard Fleming by one assist with eight on the year.

Ashley Lundberg led the U16 Cal Cougars to a 3-2 victory over Cal Odyssey, giving her side its second victory of the year. Jonathan Harris tallied all three goals for the U14 Seacoast United in a 3-1 road win over the New Hampshire Phantoms.
