USL announces Week 15 honors
Tuesday, July 27, 2004

TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced today the Week 15 Teams of the Week, honoring Seattle’s Roger Levesque, Western Mass’ Bryan O’Quinn and Rochester’s Nina Scalzo as the Players of the Week in the A-League, PSL and W-League. Santa Rosa United’s Elise Britt and Super Nova FC’s John Noriega were named the Super Y-League Players of the Week.

The Seattle Sounders garnered four points this week to stay in the crucial fourth place spot in the Western Conference.  Figuring prominently in the win and tie was forward Roger Levesque.  Levesque notched both goals in a 2-0 win over the Portland Timbers and added another in a 2-2 tie with the Milwaukee Wave United.

His first goal came at the 42nd minute mark against the Timbers when midfielder Jonathan Bolanos sent a cross to the back host that Levesque headed past goalkeeper Josh Saunders for the eventual game-winner.  Then in the 80th minute, Levesque chipped Saunders after a long outlet pass by Sounders goalkeeper Preston Burpo.

Levesque, a 2003 San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) draft pick, got his third goal of the weekend and seventh of the season in the 29th minute to cut a two-goal Wave United lead to 2-1.

The Western Mass Pioneers made the Northern Division race more interesting this week by collecting all nine points in their three matches.  Goalkeeper Bryan O’Quinn backstopped the team to three consecutive shutouts over five days.

O’Quinn, a three-year member of the Pioneers, had 11 saves during the three-game stretch.  He is now tied for fourth in the league in shutouts with four and is fifth in the league for allowing just 1.235 goals per game. He now has eight career regular season shutouts.

The Rochester Ravens head into the postseason with an 8-6-0 record, a win total equal to that of their last six seasons combined since reaching the playoffs with an 8-2 mark in their second season in 1997.

One of the key players in the turnaround has been Nina Scalzo, who tallied four goals and three assists in a pair of victories over Rhode Island and Sudbury to finish above .500 for the season.

Scalzo opened the season with a two-goal, three assist performance in a 6-0 win over the Rhode Island Lady Stingrays. She tallied the two opening goals and added an assist for a 3-0 halftime lead. She went on to set up two more goals in the second half as the Ravens cruised to the win.

Two nights later, Scalzo gave the Ravens a 1-0 halftime lead against the Sudbury Canadians on a 42nd minute goal. With the game well in hand at 3-0, she capped the night with her fourth tally of the week in the 76th for a 4-0 win.

Elise Brit led the 9-0-1 Santa Rosa United U16 girl’s team to a 3-0 victory over the Cal Cougars with a goal and two assists to remain unbeaten. The U15 Super Nova FC Boys (7-3-1) nabbed a 1-0 victory over the Northern Virginia Royals with a second-half goal from defender John Noriega.
