USL announces Week 10 honors
Tuesday, June 22, 2004

TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced the today the Teams of the Week for Week 10 of the season, honoring Calgary’s Conrad Smith, New Hampshire’s Bjorn Hansen, Fort Wayne’s Dan Broxup and New Jersey’s Marinette Pichon as the Players of the Week in the A-League, Pro Soccer League, Premier Development League and W-League. Calli Nagle of the U17 Coppa Crush and Joseph Sorrentino of the U16 Jersey Shore Boca were named the Super Y-League Players of the Week.

The Calgary Mustangs surprised the Vancouver Whitecaps on Friday night with their first win over the rival club.  The 3-0 result was decided by halftime as Conrad Smith notched a pair of goals to pace the Mustangs.

Smith put away a pair of crosses in the 18th and 42nd minutes off of assists by Sergei Kolomiets-Raad and Geert Brusselers.  Smith headed home the first goal and completed the brace with a close-range shot.

The 22-year old Trinidadian striker is part of the T&T national team pool, but has yet to crack the lineup for his first cap.

Coming into the game, the Whitecaps had been undefeated in A-League play versus teams from Calgary over 12 games dating back to 2002, with an all-time record of 10-0-2.

The New Hampshire Phantoms extended their winning streak to five games this past week with victories over the Rhode Island Stingrays and the Western Mass Pioneers. Forward Bjorn Hansen nearly doubled his goal total by recording two goals in each match.

Hansen, who leads the PSL in points with 21 and in goals with nine, scored both goals in a 2-0 defeat of the Stingrays.

He picked up where he left off in the next match, bringing the Phantoms back from a goal down to defeat the Pioneers with strikes in the 62nd and 85th minutes.

Scoring is nothing new to the seven-year veteran, who has recorded at least 14 points each season, surpassing 20 for the sixth time this season. He has 145 career points in the PSL on 55 goals and 35 assists. In his first season with the Phantoms last season, he tallied nine goals and five assists.

The Fort Wayne Fever moved to the top spot in the Great Lakes Division with a 4-1 victory over the Toledo Slayers Saturday behind the offensive prowess of Dan Broxup, who had three goals and an assist.

Five minutes after falling behind on a 14th minute goal by Cam Cameron, Broxup found Coby Kother for the equalizer. Just before the end of the half, Broxup scored the first of his hat-trick in the 42nd minute for a 2-1 halftime lead. In the second half he completed the feat with goals in the 63rd and 89th minutes for the win.

The hat-trick was Broxup’s third of the season – all coming over the last four games. He showed a glimpse of his talents two seasons ago, scoring twice in his lone appearance for the Cocoa Expos. He also played one game for Cocoa last season. Broxup leads the Fever with 14 goals on the season.

Former WUSA Most Valuable Player Marinette Pichon proved valuable for the New Jersey Wildcats Wednesday night in a battle of unbeatens as she tallied two goals and an assist in the club’s 4-1 win over the New Jersey Lady Stallions.

The French international set up the opening marker when she found Manya Makoski in the 31st minute. At the close of the half, she found the back of the net herself on an assist from England international Kelly Smith in the 45th minute.

A goal from Elizabeth Reed in the 65th closed the gap to 2-1 for the Lady Stallions, but Smith scored in the 77th and Pichon put the game out of reach in the 82nd.

Joining the team four games into the season, Pichon has already caught up to Smith as each have eight goals on the campaign. Smith leads the team in scoring with 22 points to Pichon’s 20.

Pichon and Smith went on to guide the Boston Breakers to a 3-3 draw against the Washington Freedom at the WUSA Festival in Blaine, Minnesota Saturday with a goal each in the match.

Jersey Shore Boca U16 standout Joseph Sorrentino scored all four goals, two unassisted, in the team’s 4-1 upset victory over DC United Sunday.

Midfielder Calli Nagle scored the game-winner in overtime for the U16 Coppa Crush against FC Reston Sunday.
