TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced the Teams and Players of the Week today for the A-League, Pro Soccer League and Premier Development League, honoring Montreal’s Greg Sutton, New Hampshire’s Richard Flemming and Cocoa’s Bryce Wegerle as the Players of the Week.
The Montreal Impact have yet to concede a goal on the season, thanks in part to 2003 A-League Goalkeeper of the Year Greg Sutton, who has picked up right where he left off last season. Sutton finished the 2003 regular season with shutouts in three of the final four games and posted a clean sheet against the Rhinos in their first-round playoff series.
The fourth-year Impact player now has 30 regular season shutouts with Montreal, 36 in his six-years in the A-League.
After posting a season-opening shutout in Puerto Rico the previous week, Sutton again proved daunting on the road on back-to-back nights this past weekend, registering shutout victories.
He opened the weekend with four saves in a 106-minute double-overtime 1-0 victory over the Charleston Battery Friday night at Blackbaud Stadium. He stopped a Velko Iotov penalty kick attempt Saturday night against the Atlanta Silverbacks in the 80th minute to help preserve the 2-0 shutout win.
The New Hampshire Phantoms built a quick two-goal lead against the Westchester Flames en route to a 3-3 draw in New Rochelle, New York Saturday courtesy of the excellent midfield play of Richard Flemming.
In his eighth year with the club, Flemming sparked the team by setting up Bjorn Hansen for the opening strike in the 24th minute and three minutes later found Ryan Ackerman for the second.
In his seven previous seasons, Flemming has been a staple for the team, recording 23 goals and 14 assists with his single-season high of 13 points coming in his first season in 1997.
A second-generation Wegerle is beginning to make a name for himself following in the footsteps of his father, Steve, and his uncle, Roy, who have played at the highest levels of the game in the US.
Bryce Wegerle made his debut in the PDL this weekend and led his Cocoa Expos to a pair of victories, providing clutch scores in both.
Trailing 1-0 Friday night to the Central Florida Kraze, Wegerle scored the equalizer in the 55th minute to help lead the Expos to a 2-1 win. The following night, Wegerle tallied the lone goal on a free kick in the 70th minute to give Cocoa a 1-0 road win against the expansion Ajax Orlando Prospects.
