LOS ANGELES, Ca. - The Pali Blues are pleased to announce the addition of defender Sasha Andrews and goalkeeper Roxanne Barker to the squad ahead of the 2013 W-League season. This will be Andrews’ fourth season playing with the Blues, and Barker’s second.
“Sasha has proven herself to be a leader and one of the best defenders in the W-League,” said Pali Blues head coach Charlie Naimo. “It is great to have her back to bolster our back line.”
Andrews returns to the club following a tremendous 2012 season that almost saw the Blues take the league championship. Andrews helped Pali earn 13 shutouts in 17 matches during the season while leading the team in minutes played. Her work did not go unnoticed, and she earned a spot on the 2012 All-Western Conference Team and All-League Team. Andrews was also a finalist for the W-League Defender of the Year award.
Following the W-league season, Andrews went on to sign with the Perth Glory of the Australian W-League. She helped the team to a 7-3-3 record in the regular season and into the playoffs where they fell just short of the title following a penalty kick shootout as a result of a 1-1 draw.
Andrews’s motivation to win the W-League championship this year is fueled by the feeling of disappointment that remains following last year’s loss in the championship saying that “it’s time to finish what we started last year by getting the gold medal.”
Andrews also stated that she is looking forward to working with assistant coach Angela Hucles, who the team can learn a lot from based on her
previous experience as a member of the US Women’s National Team.
Barker, a recent graduate of Pepperdine, will return to Pali having played for the Blues during the 2011 W-League season.
Barker was a four year starter at Pepperdine accumulating record-breaking stats. She totaled 47 wins and 79 starts, which rank her first in the history of the Waves’ program. She ranks second in goals against average (0.87), shutouts (31), saves (311), and save percentage (.816).
Barker is a member of the South African Women’s National Team, and participated in the 2012 Olympics where she got the start against Sweden in group play. She also participated in the annual Cyprus Cup with South Africa in January of this year. Most recently, Barker drew interest from professional side Portland Thorns FC of the National Women’s Soccer League, and trained with them in the preseason.
“Roxy is a great addition,” commented Naimo. “Her pre-season experience with the Portland Thorns combined with her international experience will really give us two great options on goal.”
The Blues kick off the 2013 W-League season at home on May 18 taking on cross city rival LA Strikers FC.
