Former Kickers coach lands Dallas job
Friday, December 5, 2003 - Richmond Kickers News Release - www.richmondkickers.com

RICHMOND, VA -- Major League Soccer’s Dallas Burn yesterday named former Richmond Kickers coach Colin Clarke as their new head coach.  Clarke had been serving as the interim head coach since September of this year, going 2-3-1 since September 20th.

Clarke spent two years at the helm of the Richmond Kickers, amassing a 38-18 record from 1998-99.  In ’98, the team garnered the Atlantic Division crown with a 21-7 record during the regular season before the Hershey Wildcats ended the Kickers playoff run in the second round.  Then in ’99, his squad went 17-11, good for second place in the Atlantic Division, before bowing out in the first round of playoffs in a 3-2 OT loss to Staten Island.

After leaving Richmond, Clarke led the San Diego Flash (A-League) in 2000, guiding the team to a 16-9-3 record and second place in the Pacific Division.  He then headed to Dallas where he has served as the Assistant Coach for the past three seasons, starting in 2001.

Clarke was a member of the Northern Ireland National Team from 1986-1993.  He recorded 38 appearances and notched 13 goals, including one in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.  Besides starring for his national team, Colin played professionally in the English Leagues for 16 years.  He started at Tranmere, then made his way to Bournemouth, Southampton, Queens Park Rangers and finally Portsmouth.  In all, he made over 361 appearances professionally and scored 146 goals.  Once his playing career was cut short, he began coaching both amateur and professional teams.  Colin holds an English Football Association Coaching Badge and a United States Soccer Federation “A” License.

“I’m obviously very excited to have this opportunity,” said Clarke.  “After three years in the A-League and three years as an assistant with the Burn, a head coaching position in MLS was something that was an aspiration for me.  This is a very exciting time for the Burn with the move back to the Cotton Bowl for 2004 and the opening of the new stadium for 2005.  I’m looking forward to the challenge of getting the Dallas Burn back to the level that it belongs and challenging for the Cup.”
