TAMPA, FL -- The Charlotte Eagles avenged their USL-2 championship loss in Richmond with a 1-0 victory over the Kickers Saturday night and Real Maryland registered a surprising 2-0 win in Harrisburg as USL-2 leaders Charleston split points with Pittsburgh in a scoreless draw. The results kept the home teams in USL-2 winless after the first two weeks of play. Puerto Rico, meanwhile, were winners in their road debut, 3-1, at Baltimore.
Puerto Rico left the island for the first time in 2010 after advancing in the CFU Second Round and defeating Minnesota in their league opener. The Islanders posted a 3-1 victory on the road against Crystal Palace Baltimore. Nicholas Addlery headed in the opener with Josh Hansen pushing the advantage to 2-0 before the break before adding his second to make it 3-0 midway through the second from the spot.
On Sunday, Portland earned a 1-1 draw north of the border in Montreal as Ryan Pore scored in his third consecutive game for the Timbers. In Austin, the Aztex dropped their first game of the season in a 2-1 loss to Rochester.
In other results, Vancouver defeated St Louis 1-0 and Minnesota edged Tampa Bay 1-0 Saturday.
USL Second Division
Gustavo Bentos gave Charlotte the victory over the defending champions in the rematch of the 2009 USL-2 Final. Rookie Debola Ogunseye set up the winner and Steward Ceus posted the shutout. It was the first regular season loss at home for Richmond since the 2006 campaign.
In Harrisburg, Sean Rush gave Real Maryland the early lead with a goal 17 minutes in. Ben Hunter secured the victory in stoppage time as he converted a penalty after being taken down by Vince Petrasso in the box.
Hunter Gilstrap posted a second consecutive shutout on the road for Pittsburgh, this time blanking the Battery with seven saves, including a penalty kick taken by Amaury Nunes in the 70th minute.
Through six games in the first two weeks of the USL-2 season, the home clubs have a record of 0-3-3.
Premier Development League
The Hollywood United Hitmen dominated the league’s season opener with a 3-0 victory in Fresno. Jaime Chavez scored twice in the second half to lock up the win.
