AUSTIN, TX -- The Austin Aztex announced that defender Leonard Griffin will join the Aztex on a three-year contract, pending USSF approval. Griffin joins the Aztex after spending the 2009 season with the L.A. Galaxy. The 27 year old defender spent the 2007-2008 seasons with the Portland Timbers in a starting role.
“We are very pleased to sign such an experienced defender,” said Head Coach Adrian Heath. “Leonard is a player with MLS and USL experience. We think he is a quality player to add into the mix.”
Griffin joined the Galaxy heading into the 2009 season, but suffered an injury that held him out most of the year. At the end of the season, Griffin was loaned out to the Hollywood United Hitmen of the Premier Development League where he played in two matches, scoring one goal. He also spent time with the Chicago Fire from 2004-2006 where he saw time in 18 matches.
During his time at the Portland Timbers, Griffin was in a starting role for the club. He played in 56 games for Portland, scoring two goals.
Prior to joining the Timbers, Griffin played three seasons in the PDL while playing college soccer. He logged over 3,000 minutes in 39 games with two goals and two assists while playing for Orange County Blue Star from 2001-03. He earned PDL All-Conference honors in 2003.
Griffin spent his collegiate career at UCLA where he helped his team win the National Championship in 2002. He was also named an NCAA All-American in 2003.
Griffin will join the Aztex squad in late March.
The Aztex will take on the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer on Sunday, March 14 at Nelson Field at 5 p.m. Tickets are currently on sale by visiting www.austinaztex.com or by calling 512-335-8881. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for youth ages 15 and under. Children ages 5 and under are free.
