USL Hall of Fame & Awards Dinner highlights annual meetings at SoccerFest

USL News Release

Friday, November 20, 2009

TAMPA, FL -- United Soccer Leagues officially closed the door on the 2009 awards Friday night at the USL Hall of Fame and Awards Dinner as they recognized outstanding performances by its member teams and executives for the season along with the 2009 USL Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Tampa.

The evening opened with speeches from Gary Mellor of Beswicks Sports and Richard Nightingale of Umbro as well as USL Chairman Rob Hoskins and USL founder Francisco Marcos. It continued with the induction of the 10+ Clubs into the USL Hall of Fame, honoring the Charlotte Lady Eagles, Ottawa Fury and Thunder Bay Chill.

After recognizing the Preliminary Super Y-League First 11 award winners and a highlight video from the 2009 season, the Hall of Fame ceremonies continued with the induction of former Charleston Battery star striker Paul Conway, Rochester Rhinos standout defender Scott Schweitzer and Richmond Kickers championship-winning coach Leigh Cowlishaw.

Throughout the evening, USL also honored its clubs and teams for their success on and off the field. Among those awards was the newly-renamed Betsy McAdams Key Grip Award, which recognizes an excellent member of a club’s staff that is not an executive with the team. The award was renamed in honor of former Charleston Battery staffer Betsy McAdams, who embodied the meaning of the award throughout her long-standing service with the club and was also posthumously honored as the recipient of the Archie Moylan Award.

McAdams, sadly, passed away in June after a courageous battle with brain cancer. She was an original employee of the Charleston Battery since it's inception in 1993 and went on to serve in a number of roles including Director of Operations and Director of Finance & Business Administration. She was named Chief Operating Officer in May 2008.
