PDL's Ocean City posts lone amateur upset win

USL News Release

Wednesday, June 10, 2009 Update

Ogunbiyi blanked USL-2 Crystal Palace Baltimore TAMPA, FL -- In a match postponed from Tuesday, the Premier Development League’s Ocean City Barons became the first amateur side in the 2009 US Open Cup to knock off a professional club Wednesday evening, downing the USL Second Division’s Crystal Palace Baltimore 3-0 in their second tournament upset over Palace in three years. Byron Carmichael, who tallied the game-winner in 2007, struck twice in the first half with JT Noone providing a third as Tunde Ogunbiyi posted seven saves for the shutout.

The Barons advanced to the Second Round and will host the Real Maryland Monarchs, who won the other match that was delayed 24 hours due to area storms. The Monarchs scored early and battled the storms as the Aegean Hawks from the USASA saw two men sent off in a match terminated in the 78th minute due to lightning, giving the hosts the 1-0 victory.

TAMPA, FL -- The 2009 edition of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup kicked off Tuesday evening with a number of thrilling contests, including two that went to overtime and one that was decided in penalties. But in the end, the lower division clubs were unable to conjur the storied Cup Upsets on the night.

Scott Vallow

The biggest surprise of the evening was the Rochester Rhinos needing to rally against former USL-1 league rival Pittsburgh Riverhounds of USL-2. The Hounds got on the board first courtesy of former Rhino Tenywa Bonseu. But his eventual second yellow left the door for a late Rhino equalizer. After a stunning overtime session which included a Tai Atieno penalty off the crossbar, the penalty kick tiebreaker started off shockingly with Atieno sending it off the bar again. Team veteran Scott Vallow, however, proved the hero with two saves to take the tiebreaker.

The Western Mass Pioneers of USL-2 avoided an upset from amateur side Emigrantes Das Ilhas, finding the deciding goal in overtime for a 3-2 victory. They were not the only upper echelon club to receive a scare on the night as Miami FC trailed nearly a half hour to amateur side Lynch’s FC before tallying twice in the second half for a 2-1 victory. Their USL-1 brethren in Minnesota also had to rally after falling behind courtesy of two former Thunder players Johnny Torres and Andre Gotsmanov. Leonel Saint-Preux tallied a goal and an assist for the 3-2 victory.
