The Lancaster Rattlers’ Mauricio Harrie named PDL Player of the Week

USL News Release

Wednesday, May 6, 2009

TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced today the USL Premier Development League Team of the Week for the fourth week of the USL season, honoring the Lancaster Rattlers’ Mauricio Harrie as Player of the Week. Harrie’s two goals and one assist in a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the Legends in Los Angeles outpaced the other 10 members of the Team of the Week.

Multiple strikes from the Legends before the 15 minute mark put the third-year Rattlers in a 2-0 hole to start the contest, but Harrie won a free-kick opportunity nearing the 24th minute. Opting for the quick restart, Harrie’s pass to Martin Galvan beat Legend's keeper Treavor Whiddon to make it 2-1. That score held until the 73rd minute when Harrie netted his first goal of the match after winning a ball played over the top by Taylor Rivas. The Rattlers completed the comeback just six minutes later when Galvan returned the favor and picked out Harrie with room to beat Whiddon to his right side.

Other noteworthy performances included the Orange County Blue Star’s Kris Minton facing 15 shots and making nine saves en route to a 1-0 shutout win over the Southern California Seahorses. The shutout in Minton’s fourth in a row dating back to last season.

In the Northwest, the expansion Victoria Highlanders earned four points on the road in a 1-0 win over the Spiders in Spokane on Friday, May 2 and a 2-2 draw in Vancouver on Sunday, May 3. Defender Rob Veenhof earned the nod from Highlander’s General Manager Drew Finerty for his efforts in both matches.

“Rob played solid in both games,” said Finerty. [He] would be deserving of the award.”

To the east, Brooklyn began their defense of the Northeast Division title with a season-opening 2-1 win over the division’s runner-up last season, the Newark Ironbound Express. The man of the match for Knight’s General Manager Gali Maimon was midfielder Frankie Alesci.

“[He had] two assists,” said Maimon. “[He] also controlled the poise of the game offensively and defensively.”
