SILVER SPRING, MD -- Real Maryland FC announced the signings of four new additions, pending USL and USSF approval. Three have played previously in USL-1, USL-2 and Major League Soccer with the fourth coming from the collegiate ranks.
Twenty Three year-old Tom Taylor joins from Wrexham Football Club of Wales. The 6 foot 3 Englishman, who came up through the ranks as a trainee at Derby County will arrive in Maryland ready for preseason training in April.
Taylor, who made his professional debut at the age of 19 after being signed by Roy Hodgson, helped his team Viking Stavanger to win the Norwegian Premier League title in 2005. He was signed in September by Brian Little, then Wrexham manager, after a spell at the Portland Timbers of the USL First Division in 2007, but only saw action for the reserves as the club was relegated from League Two (fourth tier) of English soccer. He played in five games for the Timbers.
Along with Taylor, the Monarchs added three local players in Sean Rush, Michael Marchiano and Sal Caccavale.
Rush, signs from Brazilian team Osvaldo Cruz Futebol Clube. The promising young midfielder played in Italy before signing for Crystal Palace Baltimore in 2007. He tallied a goal and assist in 11 games for Baltimore. Rush has had interest from several European clubs and is looking forward to a very successful 2009.
Marchiano comes to the Monarchs on the back of a championship winning season with the University of Maryland. The midfielder, who captained the Terrapins to the NCAA 2008 title and was a crucial part of Sasho Cirovski’s winning team.
Sal Caccavale, who finished the seventh all-time leading goal scorer for American University, joins after a spell in the MLS. After being drafted in 2007, Caccavale scored in his lone match played for the New York Red Bulls against the Columbus Crew. He would remain with the club through the 2008 season.
"We’re very pleased with our latest signings and they are all hungry to come in and do well. We’ve got a great mix here and we expect big things," said Head Coach Anthony Hudson.
