WILMINGTON, NC -- Former Hammerheads player Tim Karalexis will return to Wilmington for the 2009 season, pending USL and USSF approval, after a four-year stint in the USL First Division.
Karalexis was a member of the Hammerheads squad from 2002-2004, which included the 2003 USL Second Division Championship. During his stint with the Hammerheads Karalexis was a member of the USL-2 All-League Team in 2003 and 2004 as well as received the USL-2 Defender of the Year award in 2004.
Karalexis commented “I am very excited to be back in Wilmington where I started my career in 2002. I love the city and fans here are great. I am really looking forward to helping the team get back to winning the championship again.”
Following his time with the Hammerheads Karalexis made his way into the USL First Division from 2005-2008. He was a member of the Charleston Battery squad from 2005-2007. While with the Battery he played in 20 games in 2005 and then missed the rest of the season due to injury. He returned to the field for the Battery in 2006, where he continued through the 2007 season. During his 2007 campaign Karalexis appeared in every game for the Battery. Karalexis was then traded in 2008 to the Portland Timbers of the USL First Division.
Wilmington Hammerheads Head Coach David Irving stated, “We are very fortunate to have signed Tim for the 2009 season. He has been unlucky the past few years with injuries but we look for him to be a big part of our 2009 squad. He will be a great asset for our organization on and off the field.”
