Week 8 Pro honors announced
King and Harrison Players of the Week

USL News Release

Tuesday, June 10, 2008

TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced the USL First Division and USL Second Division Team of the Week honors Tuesday for Week 8 of the season, honoring Charleston’s Aaron King and Wilmington’s Alex Harrison as the Players of the Week, respectively.

King and Harrison led clubs of the Carolinas to victory Tied 1-1 at the break with visiting Montreal, Aaron King came off the Charleston bench with a half-hour remaining and proved to be an astute change in the lineup with a goal and assist for a 3-1 victory.

King opened his attack when he lashed a shot over the bar from six yards out after a good build up from the right side.

Aaron King made amends for his miss in the 73rd minute after goalkeeper Matt Jordan spilled a hard shot from Ian Fuller. King pounced on the loose ball and slotted it home.

Charleston sealed the win in the 86th minute with a well worked goal that started with a pass from forward Darren Spicer to King just inside the box. King slipped the ball square across the goal to David Kenga, who finished neatly at the back post.

In a showdown of the league's two winless sides, it was the host Wilmington Hammerheads coming out on top in a wild 5-3 shootout against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds that saw a four-goal performance and two penalties on the night.

The scoring frenzy began early in the 13th minute when forward Alex Harrison went down from a ruff foul inside Pittsburgh's 18 that resulted in a penalty kick taken by Harrison for the first goal and the lead for the first time all season.

After a pair of goals from the visitors, Harrison capitalized on a missed defensive assignment and nailed a shot to the far post and past goalie Phil Marfuggi to tie the game at 2-2 in the 25th minute.

Suddenly in the 29th minute as Harrison was making a run on goal, Marfuggi came out of goal too aggressively and tackled Harrison illegally inside the box which set up another penalty kick by Harrison and a certain goal for the lead for the Hammerheads 3-2.

The second half action started early, as did Alex Harrison. It was obvious that a hat-trick in the first half was not enough for number 14. In the 49th minute, Harrison blasted his shot near post as he dribbled across the goalie box for his final goal of the night.

The scoring was the first of the year through six games for Harrison, who was a prolific scorer in his native England. He had previously captained England’s U-18 national team, scoring four goals in six games. While playing for the youth squad of English Premier League club Portsmouth, he scored 54 goals in 48 games.
