USL News Release
Tuesday, August 14, 2007
TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues announced the USL First Division and USL Second Division Teams of the Week for the 17th week of the season, honoring Atlanta’s Macoumba Kandji and Wilmington’s Brian Cvilikas as the Players of the Week, respectively.
Struggling to find a consistent goal scorer this season, the Atlanta Silverback may have finally found the answer in Macoumba Kandji, who helped lead the team to a pair of victories on the week.
A former member of the club’s PDL side in 2006, the team was awaiting Kandji’s VISA paperwork to clear to add him to the USL-1 side this season. It may prove a worthwhile wait as he applied constant offensive pressure and the second goal in Friday’s 3-0 victory over the Puerto Rico Islanders.
Two nights later in Miami, Kandji broke a 1-1 draw two minutes into the second half with the game-winner as the club posted its second straight three-goal game for the first time this season in a 3-1 win in South Florida.
The Wilmington Hammerheads closed out the season with a 3-0 victory over the Bermuda Hogges in the USL Second Division regular season finale Sunday. Forward Brian Cvilikas made it a memorable one with all three goals.
The second-year professional only had two assists in 16 games coming into the season finale for the Hammerheads, but went out with a bang with three strikes in the second half in the 58th, 64th and 90th minutes to move Wilmington into seventh in the league.
