Weekly Pro Honors announced
Gregor and Codrington Players of the Week

USL News Release

Monday, May 14, 2007

TAMPA, FL -- United Soccer Leagues announced the USL First Division and USL Second Division Teams of the Week for the fourth week of the season, honoring Portland’s Andrew Gregor and Cleveland’s Nigel Codrington as the Players of the Week, respectively.

Gregor leads USL-1 in scoring (George Holland)Trailing 2-0 late in the game to his former Seattle Sounders club Friday, midfielder Andrew Gregor saw his club pull within a goal and then had to step to the spot for a penalty kick with three minutes of regulation remaining. Coming off two missed penalties in their season opener last month to Puerto Rico, Gregor had to buck the trend to secure a draw against the Timbers rivals and buried the shot into the lower corner.

Two nights later Gregor helped end Portland’s winless record against the Rochester Raging Rhinos with a goal and assist in the 2-0 victory. Gregor’s fourth goal of the season came in the 24th minute to give the Timbers an early 1-0 lead. The play developed off of a throw in to forward Chris Bagley, who controlled the ball and delivered a quick pass to Gregor in the box. From 15 yards out on the left post, Gregor rifled a shot into the far upper corner. The Timbers took a 2-0 lead in the 32nd minute on a 32-yard bomb by defender Leonard Griffin past Harrison along the left post. Gregor, out on the right wing, found Griffin running to space towards the top left side of the penalty area. With a right foot, Griffin netted his first goal as a Timber.

The expansion Cleveland City Stars have gotten off to red hot start at 3-0-0 in their debut season. Leading the way this week was striker Nigel Codrington, a Guyanese who last played professionally in Trinidad & Tobago.

The USL-2 newcomer helped Cleveland rally from a 1-0 deficit in Cincinnati with an unassisted tally in the 69th minute and then notched the game-winner just three minutes later on an assist from defender Mark Schulte.

The Stars victory ensured Cleveland a spot in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup for 2007.
