RICHMOND, VA -- In response to the recent tragedy at Virginia Tech, the Richmond Kickers will host the Virginia Tech Men’s soccer team in an exhibition match to be held at the University of Richmond Stadium (just off the downtown expressway) on Tuesday, May 1st at 7:00 p.m. All proceeds from the gate will be donated to the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund.
General admission tickets are $5.00 (youth and adult) and can be purchased in advance via RichmondKickers.com or at the gate on game day. Fans are encouraged to wear maroon and orange to show Hokie Spirit.
“I think it will be a tremendous opportunity for Hokie fans, soccer fans, and non-soccer and non-Hokie fans in central Virginia to join both teams in honoring the victims of the recent tragedy on our campus” comments Virginia Tech Head Coach Oliver Weiss. “It speaks volumes for the Kickers organization to do this on such a short notice. It is our hope to bring people together who want to feel connected to our Virginia Tech world. Why not through a soccer match on a Tuesday night in Richmond?”
The Kickers roster features two players who attended Virginia Tech, rookies Charlie Howe and Kevin Edwards. A native of Mechanicsville, Virginia, Howe recently finished his collegiate career with the Hokies (2002-2006), making 77 appearances while notching three goals and 12 assists for 18 points. Fredericksburg, Virginia local Edwards attended one year at Virginia Tech (2004) where he made 20 appearances, starting 18 with two goals on the season.
The Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund was established to remember and honor the victims of the tragic events to aid the healing process. The Fund will be used to cover expenses including but not limited to assistance to victims and their families, grief counseling, memorials, communication expenses and comfort expenses.
