BROOKLYN, NY – On the strength of goals by Jared Hedglin and Mark Luxama, the Brooklyn Knights U-16 team of United Soccer Leagues Super Y-League beat FC Westchester, 2-0 to open the 2007 season Wednesday night at the Metropolitan Oval.

“I am happy with the win tonight,” Knights coach Carlo Acquista said. “FC [Westchester] is a very good team with tons of speed and athleticism. We are going to revaluate some mistakes we made in the second half and work on being much more consistent for 80 minutes.”

Brooklyn’s first goal came in the 15th minute with Hedglin picking up a second ball from 25 yards out and blasting a half volley into the opposite corner, over the goalkeeper’s head.

Just five minutes later, off a counterattack run by the Knights, a Westchester defender missed a clearance and Luxama was off and running to goal from about 20 yards out. His shot soared into the upper corner to give the Knights a 2-0 lead.

In the second half, Westchester came out flying with a long ball game trying to find forwards feet early and often. FC Westchester Head Coach Ed Quiroga stemmed success through midfielder Brian Cabrera and striker John Pierre Arenas but the Knight’s defenders and goalkeeper Alex Naples were up for the challenge to preserve the shutout.

Week 5 Super Y-League
Slow rumblings of the bulky Super Y-League season have begun. Each week more of the top youth academies across North America commence their long journey to the Super Y-League North American Finals in November. This week, FC Westchester won two matches in spite of their loss to Brooklyn in the U16 boys division. FC Westchester’s U14 boys took a 3-1 decision from TSF Academy on Wednesday, April 18. The clubs U15 boys, led by Head Coach Carlos Casas, posted four goals in a 4-1 win over New Jersey’s Junior Stallions. All of FC Westchester’s week five matches were played on the road.

A handful of matches close the door on week five this weekend as additional Mid Atlantic action mingles with Southeast games on the Super Y-League calendar. The South Jersey Barons host TSF Academy in a slew of dates set for Saturday, April 21. The two premier clubs will battle in U15-U17 girls’ action, as well as U13 and U15 boys. The Barons also host the nomadic FC Westchester U16’s, who will be looking to rebound from their 2-0 loss to Brooklyn.
