Battery sign Byron Alvarez

CHARLESTON, SC -- The Charleston Battery has agreed to terms with veteran striker Byron Alvarez. Alvarez arrives in Charleston after four seasons with the USL First Division Portland Timbers. Alvarez is Portland’s all-time leading goal scorer with 41 goals and 9 assists in 96 games played.
A native of Mexico City Alvarez joined Portland after playing one season with Major League Soccer’s MetroStars (now New York Red Bulls) in 2002; the MetroStars acquired Alvarez from Tampico of the Mexican Second Division.
Alvarez turned pro at age 16 and in addition to Tampico has also played for Mexican sides, Reboceros de La Piedad, Jaiba Brava de Tamaulipas and Astros de Ciudad Juarez.
The Battery has also signed rookie defender Lee Sandwina. A native of Santa Rosa, CA, Sandwina played college soccer at San Jose State before transferring to the University of Virginia in 2004. Alvarez and Sandwina both featured for the Battery in last week’s Carolina Challenge Cup tournament.

Charleston Battery pre-season continues with games Wednesday & Saturday
The Charleston Battery continues its preparations for the 2007 USL First Division season with two scrimmages this week. Wednesday the Battery plays Wake Forest University then Saturday Charleston takes on the USL Second Division Wilmington Hammerheads. Both games are open to the public and are free admission.
