MONTREAL, QUE -- The Montreal Impact are lending a hand in helping underprivilaged kids get their school year underway in a positive fashion.
Following the fundraising campaign undertaken by Le Regroupement des Magasins-Partage, which led to the contribution of 47 new donors, including the Montreal Impact, 1,000 underprivileged kids will kick off the school year with a school bag full of material and a well-stocked lunch box, while their families will have enough groceries for a full week. The operation is underway August 24 to 27 in eight Magasins-Partage locations in various city boroughs.
"For a child, going back to school with joy, dignity, a full stomach and equipped with all the right tools is a great help towards a successful school year," said Mrs Sylvie Rochette, Director of Le Regroupement des Magasins-Partage.
Impact midfielder Patrick Leduc was on hand at the press conference, Wednesday, to announce the team’s contribution to the cause. The Montreal club, through its sponsors Vachon and Fruité, contributed 1,000 tickets for Wednesday’s game against Edmonton. Vachon and Fruité also donated, respectively, 800 boxes with Hop & Go snacks and 1,000 juice bottles.
"Kids are a major part of our fan base, and some of them don’t have the chance to come out and see our games, they even sometimes have to go hungry. If we can do something to help them, all the better. It’s part of our role to help them out and to lend them a hand," said Mr. Leduc.
On the Commission scolaire de Montréal territory, close to half of the students come from families with low income.
"The association between our school commission and Le Regroupement des Magasins-Partage demonstrates our determination to finds ways to fight poverty and help our kids be successful," said CSDM President, Mrs. Diane de Courcy.
