VIRGINIA BEACH, VA -- The Hampton Roads Piranhas have announced an affiliation with the Virginia Power Soccer Association (VPSA).  VPSA is a non-profit organization with the mission to develop, support, encourage, and foster the participation of Virginia’s power wheelchair athletes in the competitive sport of power soccer.

Power soccer is an exciting new development for power wheelchair users. The competitive sport has been played for more than 16 years but is just now coming to Virginia. 16 states and 9 countries are currently fielding teams and tournaments. It is a team sport played by individuals with various disabilities. The game is played on a regulation size basketball court and occasionally outdoors. Two teams of 4 attack, defend, and maneuver an oversized soccer ball in an attempt to score goals. The game is non-stop action similar to an indoor soccer match. Power soccer is the first competitive team sport designed and developed for power wheelchair users.

Piranhas General Manager and VPSA board member, Marcie Laumann said, “The Piranhas are eager to help VPSA get rolling, and we will commit our players and our resources to this very worthy cause. Everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy the sport of soccer, including those individuals with disabilities. We welcome VPSA to the Piranhas family”.
