2006 W-League Season Review:
Whitecaps win Canadian showdown
The usual suspects were there at the end of the season as the favorites to take the title with the defending champion New Jersey Wildcats finishing 14-0-0, Ottawa Fury 10-1-1 and the championship hosts Vancouver Whitecaps 11-0-1 gathering in British Columbia.
Looking to crash the party were the 7-1-4 Toronto Lady Lynx and 10-4-0 Charlotte Lady Eagles, who advanced to the final four championship weekend out of the Central Conference.
Ottawa edged Toronto 3-2 to advance to the Eastern Conference playoffs where they knocked off the Wildcats 3-2 in a rematch of the 2005 W-League Championship. The Fury got the win on a hat-trick from Amy Vermeulen, who finished with seven playoff goals after posting just four during the season.
The Canadian sides dominated at the W-League championship with Ottawa dispatching of Charlotte 2-1 and Vancouver crushing conference rival Seattle 5-0 in a nearly flawless performance in the league semifinals.
Despite having their chances, Ottawa saw US international Tiffeny Milbrett and Canadian international Christine Sinclair, who was named tournament MVP, propel Vancouver to its second championship with a 3-0 win, becoming the fourth W-League team to win it twice.
